The box in “The Coon” is a merchandise reveal. The Coon, Cartman’s crime-fighting alter ego, hands a box to the police, and when the officers open it they find shirts printed with “Who is the Coon?” and the Coon mask. The joke reads as Cartman using his supposed heroics to sell his own brand. That reading is an interpretation of the scene, not a explanation the show’s creators have confirmed.
What happens in the scene
The box moment comes during the Coon’s visit to the police station, and it follows a running gag in which he keeps turning up in different places and wearing down Sgt. Yates. The sequence unfolds in a clear order:

- The Coon tells the officers that he has something that might interest them. The episode script gives his line as “But in the meantime I have something that might interest you.”
- He hands over a box and leaves.
- The officers open it and find shirts bearing “Who is the Coon?” along with the Coon mask.
The punchline therefore lands on the contents, not on any mystery about the box itself. The script for the episode (production code 1302) describes the shirts and mask in the same way, so the detail is consistent across transcripts. South Park Archives, “The Coon/Script” and Planearium, “Episode 1302 – The Coon” both record the shirts and the mask.
Why the reading is self-promotion
The joke works because the Coon is a character Cartman invented to be admired. Handing police merchandise bearing the Coon’s name turns a public-service moment into a sales pitch: the hero does not just solve problems, he also tries to market his identity to the people who should be on his side. The gag exposes the vanity behind the costume rather than offering any hidden symbolic meaning.
#1 Best Overall
Two points keep this reading in proportion:
- It is an interpretation drawn from the scene’s observable details. Nothing in the script states the motive in words.
- No creator statement explaining the box joke was found in the sources available for this article. The reading should therefore be attributed to the scene itself, not to Trey Parker, Matt Stone, or the writing staff.
Where to verify the details
If you want to check the scene yourself, start with the script transcripts linked above, which agree on the box, the shirts, and the mask. For the episode’s release context, South Park Studios announced a collector’s-edition DVD, “A Little Box of Butters,” in a post dated September 12, 2010; that release lists “The Coon” among its included episodes. The announcement does not discuss the box joke, and current availability of that DVD was not verified for this article.
