Zara Malik is a strong candidate for the title, and the case rests on three things: she is a rival on Sensei Wolf’s team, she is set against Tory in the girls’ final, and critics have noticed a gap between how she presents herself and how she behaves. Whether she is the best new villain of the season is a matter of judgment, not a verifiable ranking. What the official material establishes is her role in the story, and that role is what the argument below is built on.
Who Zara Malik is in Cobra Kai
- Played by Rayna Vallandingham. Netflix’s official media center lists Vallandingham as Zara in the Season 6 cast.
- Part of Sensei Wolf’s team. Netflix Tudum’s feature on the Season 6 Part 2 photos places Zara among Wolf’s students, alongside Axel Kovacevic.
- A rival to Tory. The show’s finale coverage on Netflix Tudum and TIME’s recap both describe Zara and Tory meeting in the girls’ final.
Her role on Sensei Wolf’s team
Zara’s importance begins with the tournament. Netflix describes the Sekai Taikai as a karate competition that brings fighters from around the world together to determine who is best. Wolf’s students are the rival side entering that competition, so Zara is not a figure at the edge of the season’s conflict. She is on the opposing team in the central event, which gives her antagonism tournament stakes as well as personal ones.
Public image versus private conduct
The most distinctive thing said about Zara comes from TIME’s recap of the series, which calls her “a secretly vicious but publicly beloved karate influencer” and identifies her as an Iron Dragons fighter. That is a critic’s description, not an official character definition, and it is not a line of dialogue from the show. It still points to what makes the character work on paper: a public persona that the audience can see is at odds with how she acts in private.
That split is why she may feel sharper than a straightforward heavy. A villain who is openly hostile is easy to read. A villain whose popularity depends on an image is harder to trust, and the story can use that gap to make rivals and viewers unsure of what she is really after. The specific scenes that show this gap are best judged in the episodes themselves; this article does not reconstruct them.

The girls’ final against Tory
The rivalry with Tory reaches its climax in the girls’ final, which both Netflix’s finale coverage and TIME’s recap place at the center of the closing stretch. For a villain, a final is the point where the setup pays off. Whether it does so for Zara depends on what the bout shows and how the characters react to it. Fight choreography and the exact moves in that matchup are not covered in the official material cited here, so they should be judged on screen.
How to judge whether she earns “best new villain”
Because “best” is a judgment, the fairest approach is to apply the same questions to any Cobra Kai antagonist. The table below separates what the official and critical coverage establishes from what a viewer has to check in the episodes.
| Test | What the coverage establishes | What to check in the episodes |
|---|---|---|
| Narrative function and personal stakes | Zara is a rival on Wolf’s team and the opponent in the girls’ final against Tory. | Whether her scenes with Tory add motive beyond the tournament. |
| Screen presence and performance | Rayna Vallandingham is the credited performer; the official cast listing names her as Zara. | Whether the same performance holds both the public and the private sides of the character. |
| Threat level in the tournament | The Sekai Taikai is the international competition Zara’s team enters. | How the tournament treats her in the girls’ final, and whether she registers as a serious threat to Tory. |
| Complexity versus foil | TIME’s critical read describes a persona that conflicts with her conduct, which goes beyond a simple foil. | Whether any scene explains, confirms, or undercuts that persona. |
On the evidence available, Zara has the ingredients of a memorable villain: a clear tournament role, a direct rivalry with Tory, and a split between image and behavior that critics picked up on. Calling her one of the best new villains of the season is a defensible position. Calling her the single best would require comparing performances across the whole season, which the official sources do not attempt.
