It combines a Las Vegas outbreak with a mercenary crew’s attempt to pull off a heist inside the quarantined city. Availability can vary by country and change over time, so the US listing does not confirm that the film is available everywhere.
What is Zack Snyder’s zombie movie on Netflix?
The film is Army of the Dead, a 2021 R-rated action movie. Netflix’s US page describes its premise as a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas followed by a mercenary heist, and classifies it as horror, action and adventure, and zombie horror. Netflix lists Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, and Omari Hardwick among its prominent cast members, alongside Garret Dillahunt, Ana de la Reguera, Theo Rossi, Matthias Schweighöfer, Nora Arnezeder, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Tig Notaro. Netflix’s Media Center logline likewise places the heist inside the quarantine zone. Its July 2019 announcement credits Snyder with directing and co-writing the story; the screenplay is credited to Joby Harold, Zack Snyder, and Shay Hatten. Netflix described the project as Snyder’s return to the zombie genre after his directorial debut, Dawn of the Dead. Netflix announcement
How is it different from Dawn of the Dead?
Army of the Dead is not Snyder’s earlier Dawn of the Dead. The 2021 film builds its zombie premise around a heist: the crew has to enter a quarantined Las Vegas, rather than simply survive an outbreak. Netflix identifies Army of Thieves as a prequel focused on safecracker Dieter and a European heist, making it a related option for viewers interested in that side of the story. What makes the production distinctive?
Netflix’s 2021 behind-the-scenes account says Snyder spent years acquiring 1960s-era Canon Dream lenses for the soft, organic look he wanted. He and RED Studios spent a year developing custom cameras that paired those vintage lenses with digital technology. The film also marked Snyder’s first feature as director of photography. The production recreated Las Vegas settings in Albuquerque and Atlantic City; filming inside operating Las Vegas casinos was impractical. Netflix reports that the opening scene took five weeks to shoot, with Snyder seeking dusk light. The casino set used more than 500 slot machines, and the production bought more than 2,500 plastic skeletons for set dressing. Calling Army of the Dead “underrated” is a matter of opinion, not a conclusion established by Netflix’s listings or production material. The film’s particular appeal is its blend of zombie horror and a high-stakes heist, as well as the deliberately distinctive cinematography described by Netflix. Netflix executive Ori Marmur, vice president of Studio Film, said in a May 25, 2021 article: “Army of the Dead was a must make film for me after Zack Snyder first pitched it to us nearly three years ago.” That is a statement of the studio’s enthusiasm, not evidence of a critical consensus.
