Date With Saie is a nine-episode Marathi thriller from 2018 about an obsessive fan who secretly films actress Saie Tamhankar while trying to turn their encounters into a romance on screen. Soumya Rao’s review for Scroll.in finds a distinctive premise and strong performances, especially from Rohit Kokate, but says the series loses momentum and credibility as it unfolds.
What is Date With Saie about?
Tamhankar plays a version of herself: a recognizable actress whose public presence becomes an opening for a stranger to imagine a private relationship. At a Janmashtami event, she meets Himanshu, a seemingly helpful NRI banker. He is actually Raghunath, an aspiring filmmaker who plans to make a tragic romance starring himself and Saie, using real encounters she does not know are being recorded.
The series turns celebrity culture into a surveillance story. Raghunath does not merely admire Saie from afar; he tries to manufacture access, shaping events to fit the film he has imagined. Early episodes show him manipulating her schedule to stage a coffee date, drawing information from her assistant and hacking her phone. The threat grows through these increasingly intrusive attempts to control the story around her.
What works in the series?
The premise and its celebrity-culture angle
The most compelling idea is the gap between a public figure’s visibility and a fan’s imagined entitlement to her life. Raghunath treats Saie as both a real person to monitor and a character he can cast in his own fantasy. Rao reads the series as a comment on the commodification of movie stars and the way audiences can treat them as public property.

Rao praises Tamhankar’s performance and singles out Kokate as “pitch-perfect” as the sinister, obsessive filmmaker. His role gives the thriller a credible center of unease: the danger comes from someone who presents himself as helpful while quietly arranging the world around Saie.
Where does Date With Saie fall short?
Pacing after the build-up
Rao says the intrigue develops steadily in the initial episodes, but the middle stretch slows. The final episodes recover some momentum, though not enough to make the overall progression feel consistently taut.

Thin logistics weaken plausibility
The series also skips practical details that matter to a surveillance thriller. Raghunath repeatedly appears in strategic places, but the show does not always explain how he got there. That leaves parts of the threat feeling convenient rather than carefully constructed.
Is Date With Saie worth watching?
It is a reasonable choice for viewers drawn to thrillers about obsession, surveillance and the uneasy boundary between celebrity and private life. The central concept and the lead performances are its strongest reasons to watch; uneven pacing and gaps in the plot’s logistics are the main reservations. Rao’s mixed verdict captures that imbalance: “Unfortunately, Date With Saie starts with a bang and trails off into a whimper.”

Which Date With Saie is this?
This review concerns the 2018 Marathi series, not the separate ZEE5 feature film Date with Saie, listed as released on 19 December 2025. The series listing describes nine episodes, Marathi audio and a December 2018 release; it gives 4 December as the date, while individual episode pages show 5 December.
