Why did the post draw backlash?
The comparison brought together two subjects closely associated with Swift: the Chiefs, the team of her partner Travis Kelce, and West, with whom she has had a long-running public conflict. Coverage described the football comparison as appearing to involve Swift and Kelce; Bryan’s private motive is not established.
Swift fans objected to the post. Bryan then published a follow-up explanation and deactivated his X account, according to ABC News.

What did Bryan say in his apology?
In Instagram Stories on Thursday, September 19, Bryan said he had not intended to target Swift. ABC News quoted him: “For the record guys I wasn’t coming for Taylor the other night.” He also wrote, “I was drunkenly comparing two records and it came out wrong.”
Those are Bryan’s descriptions of his own state and intent, not independently verified explanations. He said he respected Swift as a musician and had been having a hard time, and described himself as projecting. In a statement quoted by Rolling Stone Australia, he said: “I respect her so much as a musician that the last thing I want people thinking I don’t appreciate and love what she has done for music.”

His posts also referred to Swift’s music: Rolling Stone Australia reported that an earlier follow-up mentioned listening to “Thank You Aimee,” and that the apology included a screenshot of “Fortnight.” Bryan said he would take a break from tweeting. “Twitter gets me in trouble too much and I’d say it’s best I stay off it,” ABC News quoted him as writing. He added: “Don’t drink and tweet,” he wrote. “Don’t drink and tweet!!”
