Zac Brown Band’s “Pirates and Parrots” is a farewell tribute to Jimmy Buffett, shaped by their friendship and years of musical connection. The band previewed it at the 2023 CMA Awards tribute to Buffett, performed its full debut at the Hollywood Bowl on April 11, 2024, and released it on April 19, 2024, with longtime Buffett collaborator Mac McAnally featured on vocals.
How the song came together
Zac Brown said he began writing after learning that Buffett was nearing the end of his life. In a December 2023 interview, Brown described feeling the impending loss not only as a friend, but also on behalf of Buffett’s crew, team and band. Buffett died on September 1, 2023, aged 76, according to American Songwriter.
Brown characterized Buffett as a major influence and friend. Discussing Buffett’s songwriting and books, he called him “the closest thing we have to a Mark Twain in this time.” The remark was reported in CMT’s interview with Brown.
From a CMA preview to a full debut
- November 8, 2023 — CMA Awards: Zac Brown Band joined Alan Jackson for a tribute to Buffett and previewed part of “Pirates and Parrots.” The song followed the tribute performance sequence and led into “Margaritaville,” according to 117 Entertainment Group’s event account.
- April 11, 2024 — Hollywood Bowl: The band performed the song in full for the first time at “Keep the Party Going: A Tribute to Jimmy Buffett.” The event is also covered by the Los Angeles Times.
- April 19, 2024 — Release: American Songwriter reported the song’s official release and Brown’s statement: “I’m so excited for you to hear this song and to pay tribute to Jimmy Buffett.”
What the tribute evokes
The song’s farewell tone is carried by nautical and beach imagery and a communal toast to Buffett. Its title draws on the pirate-and-parrot imagery associated with Buffett’s musical world. The song is best understood as a personal send-off rather than an attempt to imitate a single Buffett hit.

The tribute follows a relationship that had already produced a notable collaboration. Buffett appeared with Zac Brown Band on CMT Crossroads in 2009 and joined the band on “Knee Deep,” from its 2010 album You Get What You Give.
