The trailer for Ricky Stanicky sets up a comedy built on one escalating lie: three grown men have been blaming an imaginary friend for their bad behavior for years, and when their partners ask to meet him, they hire an actor to play the part. Zac Efron and John Cena star in the film, which Peter Farrelly directed. The trailer was reported on January 26, 2024, and the film’s Prime Video premiere was announced for March 7, 2024.
What the trailer sets up
The film’s official synopsis, published by Prime Video, describes the origin of the lie: “When three childhood best friends pull a prank gone wrong, they invent the imaginary Ricky Stanicky to get them out of trouble!” The prank is the starting point, but the comedy comes from what happens next. The friends keep using Ricky as an alibi for immature behavior long after they are adults, so a fictional man becomes a permanent excuse for nights out, missed obligations and questionable choices.

The trailer’s central joke is that the lie eventually outgrows its creators. Their spouses and partners insist on meeting the friend they have heard about for so long. The friends cannot produce a real person, so they hire a replacement.
The three friends and the hired impersonator
Zac Efron, Andrew Santino and Jermaine Fowler play Dean, JT and Wes, the three friends who invented Ricky. John Cena plays Rod, a washed-up actor and celebrity impersonator whom the friends hire to pose as Ricky. Rod carries the nickname “Rock Hard” Rod in the synopsis, and his role drives much of the trailer’s comedy: he has to convince people who have built expectations around a man who does not exist.

The official synopsis also names William H. Macy, Lex Scott Davis and Anja Savcic among the additional cast. Their roles are not detailed in the material the trailer coverage relies on, so readers should treat the lead trio and Cena’s character as the parts the marketing emphasizes.
Who made it
Peter Farrelly directed Ricky Stanicky. Coverage of the trailer names him as director, and the film is a studio comedy rather than a documentary. Readers looking for nonfiction about the cast or the production should look elsewhere; the trailer itself is a scripted comedy preview.
