YURI!!! on ICE the movie: ICE ADOLESCENCE was officially canceled. The project committee and MAPPA said they had decided to stop production “due to various circumstances,” but did not identify a specific reason. The film’s development stretched across years of delays; the available accounts disagree on whether its first announcement was in 2017 or 2018, so seven years of continuous production is not established.
What the cancellation announcement says
The official notice says: “The production committee and staff have been in constant discussions to create and to deliver the movie, but due to various circumstances, we have had to make the difficult decision to stop the production.” It is signed “Yuri!!! on ICE PROJECT” and “MAPPA Co., Ltd.” The notice also apologizes to supporters, but names no individual spokesperson and gives no more specific explanation. That makes the cancellation itself clear, while leaving the underlying cause undisclosed. Claims about finances, creative disagreements, or politics should not be treated as confirmed explanations.
Why “after seven years” needs qualification
The TV anime aired in 2016. Accounts differ on when the film was first announced: ITmedia dates the announcement to 2018, while Crunchyroll says it was first announced in April 2017. The discrepancy means that “nearly seven years” can describe the broad span from announcement to the April 19, 2024 cancellation report, but not a verified period of uninterrupted active production.

How the project timeline unfolded
- 2016: The television series aired. Crunchyroll’s cancellation report
- 2017 or 2018: The announcement year depends on the account. Crunchyroll gives April 2017; ITmedia says 2018. ITmedia’s report
- 2019: The film had been planned for release that year. ITmedia reports that in September, the release was postponed to substantially expand the content.
- 2020: Crunchyroll recounts an official update saying production was continuing, but no release date could be announced.
- April 19, 2024: ITmedia reported the cancellation announcement. The official notice page itself is undated.
The long gap between announcement and cancellation is not evidence that production was continuously underway throughout that time.
What was planned for the film
The official film-site credits identify Mitsurou Kubo and Sayo Yamamoto for the story; Yamamoto for direction and story; Kubo for screenplay and original character design; Tadashi Hiramatsu for character design; Taro Umebayashi and Taku Matsushiba for music; Keisuke Tominaga (PIANO) for music production; and MAPPA for animation. These are confirmed project credits, not evidence that a finished film exists. Official film site
