In July 2024, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Paige Reese Whitaker took over the Young Thug YSL gang trial and said she would pick up the case and move forward. That statement came at a status hearing. It was not a ruling, the pending motions had not been resolved, and no firm date had been set for jurors to return. The case changed again in October 2024, when Young Thug (Jeffery Williams) pleaded guilty, was sentenced by Whitaker, and was released. This article explains the July 2024 transition and what followed, based on reporting through early November 2024.
What “moving forward” meant at the July 19, 2024 hearing
Whitaker met with prosecutors and defense counsel at a status hearing on July 19, 2024. Defendants and jurors were not in the room. She had just been assigned to the case, and she told the court that the trial was ongoing and that she would take it up from where it stood. Atlanta News First reported her words as “This trial is ongoing,” and she said in the hearing:

“I’m parachuting in and I’m just going to have to pick up from here and move forward.”
Read in context, the phrase described the judge’s intent to take over the case. It did not mean the trial had been scheduled to restart on a particular day, and it did not mean that outstanding legal questions were settled. Whitaker indicated that motions needed to be considered first.

Who is the new judge?
The new judge was Paige Reese Whitaker of the Fulton County Superior Court. She was the third judge assigned to the YSL case. Her appointment followed two earlier assignments that ended before she took the bench for the case.
Ural Glanville’s recusal
Judge Ural Glanville stepped aside from the case. Coverage at the time linked his recusal to concerns about a meeting with a prosecution witness. Those concerns were reported as the reason for the recusal; they were not established as findings in any court proceeding covered here.
Shukura Ingram’s brief assignment
Judge Shukura Ingram was assigned to the case for a short period and then recused. Reporting said Ingram cited a potential conflict connected to a former courtroom deputy. As with the Glanville matter, that explanation comes from news accounts, and the articles do not show that any allegation against a participant was proven.

What was still unresolved in July 2024
Three things were open when Whitaker took the bench, and reporting from that week treated them separately.

Defense motions, including motions for mistrial, remained to be addressed before the trial could move ahead. Whitaker’s comments made clear that motions came first.
- Jury return. Whitaker hoped jurors could return as early as August 5, 2024. Coverage stated plainly that this was not a firm date.
- Courtroom conduct. Whitaker emphasized punctuality and decorum, which reporting from the hearing noted as early expectations for the courtroom.
The table below separates three distinctions that are easy to blur when reading headlines about the case.
| Distinction | What the July 2024 reporting supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Judicial assignment vs. ruling on mistrial motions | Whitaker was assigned to the case and said motions needed to be considered first. | Any ruling on the defense motions for mistrial. None was reported as decided at this hearing. |
| Hoped-for jury return vs. confirmed schedule | Whitaker hoped jurors could return as early as August 5, 2024. | A confirmed date. Reporting described it as not firm. |
| July 2024 status hearing vs. later plea and sentence | The hearing was a status update in an ongoing trial. | Any outcome for the defendants. The plea and sentence came in October 2024. |
How the case changed after July 2024
The July hearing was the starting point of a new phase, not the end of the story. In October 2024, Young Thug pleaded guilty. Reporting described the plea as non-negotiated. Whitaker imposed the sentence, and Young Thug was released from the Fulton County Jail. The table lists the dated reports that cover these steps.

Limits of this update
The coverage cited here consists of news reports, not court dockets or official transcripts. The quotations and chronology are taken from those reports. The explanations for the judicial changes are reported explanations, not adjudicated findings. This article does not cover developments after the early November 2024 reporting, including any appeal or probation status, which should be checked separately against current court records.
For readers searching “Is the YSL trial moving forward?”, the accurate answer for July 2024 is that the judge intended to proceed, but motions and a jury schedule still had to be settled. The later plea is what ended the trial phase.
