It is worth watching for the way it borrows both visual languages at once.
What the film is
Alien: Monday is a fan-made animated short, not a studio production. The premise follows people working in space who must deal with the arrival of a Xenomorph, the creature from Ridley Scott’s 1979 film. The tone is creepy rather than action-driven, and the run time is close to 20 minutes, which makes it a short that can be watched in one sitting.

Who made it
The short is co-directed by Paul “OtaKing” Johnson and Claudia “Maki” Montealegre. According to James Whitbrook’s report on Gizmodo and io9, published July 24, 2024, Johnson spent six years animating the project. That is a production-history claim made by the reporter, not a figure from a production log, so treat it as reported rather than independently confirmed.
Johnson’s earlier science-fiction anime short is TIE Fighter, released in 2012. Gizmodo describes it as a tribute to a Star Wars simulator video game and to 1980s science-fiction anime. If you are comparing the two, the reliable common ground is the retro science-fiction design sensibility and the subject-matter links to the franchises they reference. Gizmodo does not establish that one is better than the other.
Why the retro look works here
The film draws on two influences. The first is the 1980s analogue science-fiction aesthetic of the original Alien: dim industrial interiors, practical-looking machinery, and a sense that the ship and its crew are worn and lived-in. The second is the design vocabulary of anime from the same decade, with its hand-drawn surfaces and heavily stylised character shapes.
Putting those together is the reason the short stands out. A horror creature built from the franchise’s original look sits inside an anime frame, and the result feels like a lost tie-in rather than a modern reboot. The setup also keeps the stakes small and domestic. A shift on a space job is an ordinary, relatable situation, and that contrast makes the arrival of the Xenomorph more unsettling.

Where to watch it
Gizmodo links to the short on YouTube under the label “Alien: MONDAY (anime, horror).” At the time of writing, we could not confirm whether that video is still online, whether it is restricted in some countries, or whether the uploader has changed. Search YouTube for that exact label and check the uploader and upload date before you rely on it. If the link no longer works, the film may have moved to another host, and we have no verified alternative to point to.
The short is presented as a fan film. We found no evidence of a licensed physical release, official merchandise, or a streaming deal, so do not assume any of those exist.
