Yola’s five-song EP My Way is a return to sounds that were part of her musical life before her solo career became associated with Americana: progressive R&B, funk, soulful pop and the UK broken beat scene. Its songs move between creative agency, personal boundaries, dating and identity rather than following one continuous story.
What does My Way mean?
The title is about creative agency, not a demand to control every detail of a collaboration. In the EP announcement, Yola put it plainly: “My Way is not about creative dictatorship.” She said the songs should be free to become what they need to be, so she can tell her story without restriction. S-Curve Records’ announcement gives her full explanation.
In an NPR interview, Yola described the title track as a response to having to negotiate to be recognized as the central person in her own life and work. She connected that struggle to people who seek access to her as an artist without centering her, and to protecting boundaries around consent and collaboration. The song’s “my way” is therefore less about refusing collaboration than insisting that collaboration respect her agency.
What songs are on the EP?

What each track is about
“Future Enemies”
Yola describes recognizing incompatibility early and leaving before friction turns into a feud. As she told NPR, “you have the profound privilege to get out of the situation without making a brand-new enemy.” It is a wry defense of choosing distance rather than manufacturing a conflict.

“Temporary”
S-Curve calls this a disco and rare-groove song about dating. Yola told NPR that it treats casual dating as a kind of respite from the emotional exhaustion of serious dating. The idea lands with comic self-awareness, not as a universal prescription for relationships.
“Symphony”
The label describes “Symphony” as sensual and upbeat, highlighting its horn melodies and staccato vocals, with a sound that recalls classic funk.

“My Way”
The title track addresses efforts to control Yola’s artistry and the pressure to negotiate for a central place in her own experience. Its boundaries theme connects the personal with the professional: being open to collaboration does not mean surrendering the right to define her story.
“Ready”
S-Curve frames “Ready” as a response to anti-immigration sentiment and the Windrush generation. The label quotes Yola recalling that people told her to go back where she came from despite her being born in the UK. In the NPR interview, she said she reframed the insult as an invitation to return to places she wanted to visit. That account is the label’s framing of the song’s historical context; the sources cited here do not independently verify the history.

What genre is My Way?
The EP does not sit in just one genre. S-Curve points to progressive R&B, classic funk, soulful pop, 1970s and 1980s soul, 1990s R&B, neo soul and UK broken beats. These are overlapping influences, not mutually exclusive labels. The broken-beat connection is especially significant because it links the EP to a musical history Yola was part of before her solo work became associated with Americana.
What is UK broken beat?
Yola described broken beat as “essentially a hybrid genre of rare groove, funk, and Afrobeat” in an interview with WNXP. She also named 1980s soul, Detroit house and jazz as elements in its mix. WNXP identifies IG Culture, 4hero and Bugz in the Attic among the scene’s early pioneers. Rather than a single fixed sound, broken beat draws on these traditions and combines them in its own way.

How the EP connects to Yola’s musical history
Yola’s interest in broken beat and related sounds predates the Americana associations of her solo career. S-Curve notes her work with Bugz in the Attic in the mid-2000s; Us Weekly’s interview also describes her earlier London-scene work as a vocalist with Bugz in the Attic and Massive Attack. That context helps explain why My Way feels like a return to familiar musical ground. It does not mean Yola is rejecting her earlier solo albums: it shows that her musical origins are broader than one genre association.
