When Logan is gravely injured and calls for Jean Grey, Morph takes Jean’s appearance and tells him, “I love you Logan, stay with me.” Former showrunner Beau DeMayo confirmed the intent: “Yes, Morph was confessing romantic feelings for Logan.”
What happens in the finale scene?
After Magneto tears the adamantium from Wolverine’s body, Logan lies gravely injured in the infirmary. Morph stays beside him. When Logan calls for Jean, Morph takes her form and says, “She can’t say it, but I can,” followed by, “I love you Logan, stay with me.” The sequence and DeMayo’s confirmation were reported by Out on May 16, 2024.
The Jean appearance is a way to reach Logan in a moment when he is calling for someone he loves. Marvel’s official X-Men ’97 Wolverine profile likewise describes his feelings for Jean and the adamantium injury that leaves him vulnerable.
Who is confessing: Morph or Jean?
Morph is confessing. Jean’s face does not make the words Jean’s, and the scene is not a revelation that she has told Logan she loves him. Morph’s line, “She can’t say it, but I can,” distinguishes Jean from the person speaking. DeMayo’s direct confirmation makes the romantic meaning explicit.

Morph’s ability to change appearance is separate from their identity and feelings. Use they/them for Morph; voice actor J.P. Karliak discussed the character’s nonbinary characterization in a Television Academy interview.
Why the moment works on two levels
- It reaches Logan through Jean: Morph borrows the appearance Logan is calling for, at a moment when he is badly injured and emotionally vulnerable.
- It reveals Morph’s own feelings: The words are Morph’s, and DeMayo confirmed they are a romantic confession.
The scene’s emotional force comes from holding those meanings together: Morph uses Jean’s image to reach Logan, but does not pretend the feelings belong to Jean.

What the scene does not confirm
The confession establishes Morph’s feelings, not Logan’s response or the future of their relationship. The confirmed meaning of this moment does not establish that Logan reciprocates, that they become a couple, or how a later season might address it.
The scene fits the series’ emphasis on volatile character relationships under pressure. In a D23 feature about X-Men ’97, Marvel Studios executive producer Brad Winderbaum called it “a soap opera” centered on characters in trying situations in a society that does not embrace them.
