In a May 2022 interview, Xochitl Gómez connected her Marvel role as America Chavez with a personal idea of power: staying happy, optimistic and resilient. She also spoke about what it meant to portray a queer Latina superhero, how she prepared for the role and the responsibility she felt toward fans.
What America Chavez’s visibility meant to Gómez
Gómez played America Chavez in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a role the 2022 interview described as her entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She called Chavez “a powerful, smart, charismatic, queer Latina.”
For Gómez, the character’s place in the story mattered as much as her presence on screen. “The fact that she is on the screen and is important to the story will make people feel seen in a way that they have never been,” she said. She also acknowledged the responsibility of taking on a character fans had expectations for, particularly as a Latina and queer figure.
Gómez hoped that representation would eventually feel ordinary enough that people would no longer have to stop and think about it. That was her aspiration, not a claim that one film could resolve the wider challenges of representation.

How Gómez recalled auditioning and preparing
In Lena Hansen’s People en Español interview, published May 2, 2022, Gómez recalled first auditioning in February 2020 without knowing the character’s identity. She said she heard nothing for six months, then got a callback and eventually completed a screen test in London. Gómez remembered casting director Sarah Finn telling her, “Welcome to the MCU. You’re America Chavez.”
Training for the role
Gómez said she already knew martial arts, including wushu. During callbacks, she trained in kickboxing and Zen; after she was cast, she recalled doing daily runs and strengthening exercises as well as wire work. She described getting past her fear of heights as one accomplishment of the process. These are Gómez’s recollections of her preparation.
