GAYLE sings “abcdefu.” It is a formally released single by GAYLE, not a clip that exists only on TikTok. GAYLE is her professional name; the legal name listed in one song reference is Taylor Gayle Rutherfurd.

Who is the singer?

The lead vocalist on the original track is GAYLE. Music metadata on MusicBrainz lists her in that role, and Apple Music’s performing-artist credits for the song agree. Any other name you see attached to a cover or a sped-up edit is a different performance, not the original recording.

When was it released?

The official single is dated August 13, 2021, and the release record associates it with Atlantic and Arthouse.

Apple Music’s page for the song displays January 31, 2020, which conflicts with that record. The sources reviewed do not explain the discrepancy, so use August 13, 2021 as the single’s release date and treat the Apple Music date as unexplained.

How the TikTok connection started

The song’s association with TikTok comes from the way it was promoted, and the account of that process is secondary reporting rather than a set of platform posts checked directly. According to that reference, GAYLE posted a TikTok asking followers to suggest song ideas. An Atlantic marketing manager suggested a song built on the alphabet, and GAYLE posted a draft of the chorus a few days later.

The same reference attributes the breakup inspiration to GAYLE’s account of trying too hard to be a nice ex after the relationship ended. The title and hook turn the alphabet sequence into a profane breakup message, which is why the phrase became easy to remember and easy to share.

Versions and related releases

“Abcdefu” is the original. The artist’s catalogue also includes related titles that are easy to confuse with it:

  • “abc (nicer)”: a softer companion version listed on Apple Music.
  • “abcdefu (angrier)”: a harsher companion version listed on Apple Music.
  • “chill” and demo versions: alternate recordings noted in the song reference.
  • A remix: an altered version; the sources do not name the remixer.
  • “abcdefu (feat. Royal & the Serpent)”: a version with the featured act credited on the track.

In every case the lead vocalist is GAYLE; none of these is a separate artist singing the original. Release dates for the individual alternate versions are not stated in the sources reviewed.
