Woody Guthrie’s radical legacy lives in songs that made workers, migrants and people facing racial injustice impossible to ignore. It also lives in the complicated afterlife of “This Land Is Your Land,” an inclusive American anthem with a history of protest—and a song used at Donald Trump’s January 2025 inauguration. That use shows how a cultural symbol can be claimed in different settings; it does not settle what the song means to every listener.

Who was Woody Guthrie?

Woodrow Wilson “Woody” Guthrie (1912–1967) was an American songwriter and performer from Okemah, Oklahoma. Best known for folk songs shaped by the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression, he also wrote poetry and prose, and made drawings and paintings. His subjects ranged from workers, unions, war and politics to love, children, spirituality and the environment. Smithsonian Folkways’ biography and the official Woody Guthrie projects site describe a body of work broader than protest songs alone.

Guthrie Publications describes him as having written more than 3,000 folk songs. That figure is an institutional formulation, not an audited total: the scale and form of his surviving work also include lyrics, art, poetry and largely unpublished prose.

Why is Woody Guthrie considered radical?

“Radical” is most useful when it names what Guthrie’s songs do rather than serving as a label for everything he created. His topical ballads put the lives and grievances of ordinary people at the center. The official archive points to “Deportee,” “The Blinding of Isaac Woodard” and “Union Maid” as songs expressing outrage at racial and labor injustice.

These works connect political ideals to specific people and circumstances: migrant workers, union members and people subjected to racist violence. Guthrie’s 1942 notebook, as reproduced by Woody Guthrie Publications, captures his belief in the relationship between music and collective voice: “there is no real trick of creating words to set to music once you realize that the word is the music and the people are the song.” His radicalism, then, is not just a matter of slogans. It is also a way of making people ordinarily left out of official narratives audible.

That description should not flatten his creative life. His archive encompasses personal, family, spiritual and environmental themes alongside political work. The range matters: Guthrie’s legacy is richer than a single ideological category or one famous song.

What does “This Land Is Your Land” really mean?

The familiar refrain offers a generous vision of belonging: “This land is your land, this land is my land, from California to the New York islands, from the redwood forests to the Gulf stream waters, this land was made for you and me.” It is easy to hear those lines as a patriotic celebration of the country’s shared landscape.

But the song’s history is not exhausted by the verses most often sung. The Library of Congress National Recording Preservation Board calls that history “complicated and, at times, controversial.” Cary O’Dell, author of its essay on the song, says it has been labeled America’s “alternative national anthem.” The phrase points to its double life: it can sound like a declaration of common belonging while also carrying a challenge to who gets access to the country’s promise.

The Library of Congress added “This Land Is Your Land” to the National Recording Registry in 2002. Its place in the registry recognizes the recording’s cultural significance; it does not reduce the song to one settled political interpretation.

Was “This Land Is Your Land” a protest song?

It belongs to both a patriotic tradition and a tradition of social protest. The Associated Press places it among American patriotic songs that also contain protest. Those strands can coexist: a song may express attachment to a country while asking whether its ideals are shared in practice.

The AP’s Loras John Schissel, a senior musicologist at the Library of Congress, explained the familiarity gained when new words are set to a known melody: “Nowadays, it would be like, ‘Here are my new lyrics that I just wrote, and you can sing them to this Beatles song.’” A familiar tune can help a song travel, but familiarity does not dictate how listeners interpret its words or history.

Why is Woody Guthrie relevant today?

In January 2025, the Associated Press reported that “This Land Is Your Land” was used at Donald Trump’s inauguration, calling it a curious choice given Guthrie’s protest legacy. The moment is a striking example of the song’s political afterlife: a piece associated with social criticism can appear in a formal patriotic ceremony, where it may carry a different emphasis.

That juxtaposition does not prove that all listeners hear the song in the same way, nor does it establish what Guthrie would have thought about present-day politics. It does show why the song’s history matters. Its familiar refrain is available to ceremonial patriotism, while its place in a protest tradition invites questions about whose land, whose prosperity and whose rights are included in the promise.

Where to hear more of Guthrie’s work

For a broader introduction than a single-song retrospective can provide, Smithsonian Folkways describes Woody at 100: The Woody Guthrie Centennial Collection as a 150-page book with three CDs and 57 tracks, alongside photographs, artifacts, artwork, lyrics, essays and previously unreleased material. Check the Smithsonian Folkways page for current edition and availability details.
