Short answer: Woody Allen considered stopping, but his 2022 comments were conditional and his representative disputed that he had announced retirement. Allen was still considering whether to make another film in 2024; in October 2026, he presented a new Madrid project.

What Allen said in 2022—and why it became a retirement story

In a La Vanguardia interview reported by TheWrap on 18 September 2022, Allen said: “My idea, in principle, is not to make more movies and focus on writing.” He added that he was thinking more about writing a novel. TheWrap framed the remarks as a retirement announcement, in the context of Wasp 22, then expected to be his 50th film. TheWrap’s report captures the headline that prompted the claim.

The qualification “in principle” matters: Allen described an idea, not a definitive decision. The next day, his representative told The Guardian: “Woody Allen never said he was retiring, nor did he say he was writing another novel.” The representative said Allen was considering stopping partly because he found it less enjoyable to make films that went straight or quickly to streaming, but had no current intention to retire while he was shooting in Paris. The Guardian reported the clarification.

What Allen said afterward

April 2024: undecided

In an interview reported by The Guardian in April 2024, Allen said, “I’m on the fence about it,” referring to making another film after Coup de Chance. He said he disliked raising money, but would seriously consider another film if someone offered to back it, and that he had many ideas. Those comments describe uncertainty, not a settled retirement. The Guardian’s 2024 report also linked his hesitation to frustration with film financing and distribution.

October 2026: a Madrid project

On 1 October 2026, Allen presented a new project in Madrid. Euronews described it as his 51st film and reported that filming was due to begin on 5 October. The outlet said Allen had recalled considering giving up cinema, but the opportunity to shoot the Madrid story proved too tempting. The project was described as a contemporary comedy involving romance, intrigue, infidelity and a diplomatic setting. Euronews’ report is evidence that he continued with another film project; it does not establish that the film has been completed or released.

What is known about the Madrid film

The project was provisionally called Wasp 2026, not confirmed as its final title. EL PAÍS reported that the sponsorship agreement with the regional government required Madrid to appear in the eventual title, and that filming was scheduled mainly in Madrid and Aranjuez. It reported €1.5 million in sponsorship from the Community of Madrid and €3 million in combined contributions from the regional government and Madrid City Council. Euronews reported an approximately €12 million budget. These are reported project figures, not evidence about Allen’s retirement. Neither the final title nor a release date is established in the cited reports. EL PAÍS reported the provisional title and sponsorship details.

So, did Woody Allen announce his retirement?

Not unambiguously. In 2022 he expressed an intention, in principle, to stop making films, while his representative said he had not announced retirement. Allen remained undecided in 2024, then presented another film project in 2026. The most accurate description is that he considered retiring from filmmaking but continued working.
