The brief release that followed his questioning was not the end of the case: a Romanian court later imposed a nine-month prison sentence, and an appeal court rejected his bid to annul or suspend it in February 2026.
What happened at the festival?
Khalifa performed at the Beach, Please! festival in Costinești, Romania, in July 2024. After he smoked cannabis onstage, Romanian authorities took him in for questioning. The Los Angeles Times reported that the prosecutor’s office, DIICOT, said a U.S. citizen had possessed more than 18 grams of cannabis and consumed additional cannabis during a performance. DIICOT’s statement did not name Khalifa; he later acknowledged the incident publicly. Los Angeles Times
The amount cited was an allegation by prosecutors, not a finding established in that initial statement. The later court proceedings resulted in a conviction and sentence.
What did Khalifa apologize for?
On July 14, 2024, Khalifa posted that he had not intended to disrespect Romania by lighting up onstage. He said authorities had treated him respectfully and let him go, and joked that he would return without a large joint. Global News reproduced his post: “Last nights show was amazing. I didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage. They were very respectful and let me go. I’ll be back soon. But without a big ass joint next time.” Global News

How did the case progress in court?
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| July 2024 | Authorities questioned Khalifa after the festival incident; he was released. |
| April 2025 | A lower court imposed a criminal fine of 3,600 lei, according to the Associated Press. |
| December 2025 | The Constanța Court of Appeal sentenced him to nine months in prison for drug possession for personal consumption, the Associated Press reported. |
| February 26, 2026 | The appeal court rejected his request to annul the sentence as inadmissible and his request to suspend it as unfounded, according to the Associated Press. |
The July release after questioning was therefore not a dismissal of the case. The fine, later prison sentence, and 2026 appeal decision were separate procedural stages. Associated Press, February 26, 2026 Associated Press, December 18, 2025

The Associated Press said Romanian law criminalizes possession of cannabis for personal use, with penalties of three months to two years in prison or a fine. That is AP’s summary of the law; the range should not be confused with the specific sentence imposed in Khalifa’s case. In its February 26, 2026 report, AP said it was unclear whether Romanian authorities would seek his extradition. The cited reporting does not establish a later extradition action. Associated Press
