765874: Unification is an eight-minute short film released by OTOY on November 18, 2024, the 30th anniversary of Star Trek: Generations. It revisits Captain Kirk after the events of that film, with Sam Witwer portraying Kirk and William Shatner contributing narration. “One last time” describes this 2024 return; it is not confirmation that Shatner will never play Kirk again.

What is 765874: Unification?

OTOY announced the short on November 18, 2024, describing it as an eight-minute video revisiting Kirk’s final screen appearance in Star Trek: Generations. The release date marked 30 years since that film’s 1994 release. The runtime is OTOY’s stated figure, also repeated in contemporaneous coverage; the sources do not establish an independently timed duration. OTOY’s announcement

The title follows Generations, in which Kirk dies on Veridian III. Rather than presenting a conventional continuation of the film’s plot, Unification moves through images and memories associated with Kirk’s life and ends with a meeting with Spock. Engadget’s November 20, 2024 report

What happens in the short?

Engadget describes a de-aged Kirk moving through an otherworldly landscape after his death. TrekNews’s November 19, 2024 account identifies a series of references to the character’s past, including Gary Mitchell, Kirk’s burial site, J.M. Colt, the crashed Enterprise-D, Yor, and younger versions of Kirk. These images make the film a visual remembrance as much as a continuation. TrekNews’s review

In the final scene, as TrekNews describes it, Kirk finds Spock lying in bed; the two sit together at sunset and hold hands. The short does not establish a definitive explanation for the setting. It may evoke an afterlife or a Nexus-related experience, but those are interpretations rather than a confirmed canonical answer.

TrekNews notes that the scenes contain no dialogue and draws attention to Michael Giacchino’s score. That does not mean the entire short is silent: Engadget reports Shatner’s narration, and OTOY says he voiced a key moment. TrekNews also reproduces a line spoken as Kirk: “How we deal with death is at least as important as how we deal with life.”

Who performs in it, and how was it made?

Sam Witwer performs as Kirk and Lawrence Selleck as Spock. OTOY says both worked in costume and used physical and digital prosthetics for period-accurate portrayals. Shatner and Susan Bay Nimoy were executive producers; Shatner also helped guide the creative and technical direction and supplied narration. OTOY’s production announcement

Carlos Baena directed, Jules Urbach wrote the story, and Giacchino composed original music. OTOY describes a production combining location photography, virtual production, CG set extensions, physical and digital prosthetics, LightStage scanning, Octane rendering software, and the Render Network. These are the techniques OTOY identifies; they do not establish that generative AI made the film.

OTOY’s announcement quotes Shatner discussing digital prosthetic technology: “takes years off of your face, so that in a film you can look 10, 20, 30, 50 years younger than you are.” The remark is about the technology’s ability to alter an actor’s appearance, not a claim that Shatner performed the role on set.

TrekNews also identifies Robin Curtis as Saavik, Gary Lockwood as Gary Mitchell, Mahé Thaissa as J.M. Colt, and Dave Blass as production designer.

How does it relate to Star Trek: Generations?

Generations supplies the story’s starting point: Kirk’s death on Veridian III. Unification looks back across his life and brings him together with Spock, turning the film’s ending into an occasion for a final, reflective encounter. It is best approached as a short tribute connected to Generations, not as evidence that the franchise has provided an official explanation for what happens to Kirk after death.
