Will ‘The Penguin’ Season 2 Happen? What Colin Farrell Has Said About Returning as Oz

Season 2 of The Penguin is not officially confirmed. Colin Farrell is open to returning as Oz only if the story is strong, and 2026 reports disagree about the show’s future.

Season 2 of The Penguin has not been officially confirmed. Colin Farrell, who plays Oz, has said he has no deep desire to return, but he would be open to it if the team built a second season strong enough to justify one. Reports from 2026 disagree about whether the show is moving ahead, and none of them is a direct announcement from HBO or DC Studios. Because the public record consists of conditional comments, discussion, and secondhand reporting, no reliable likelihood can yet be attached to a return.

Where the status stands

The table below lists each dated item in the record, from earliest to most recent, along with what it actually establishes.

Date Who or what What was said or reported What it establishes
January 2025 Dylan Clark, executive producer, as reported at the time A second season could be pursued if the team came up with an idea for one; he described “quiet conversations.” Discussion, not a renewal
February 2025 Colin Farrell, in a Variety interview at the SAG Awards “I’m in no rush”; he would be open to an idea that worked alongside Matt Reeves’s cinematic universe. Conditional interest
August 2025 Lauren LeFranc, showrunner “There’s no current status update.” No status update at the time of the interview
May 8, 2026 GamesRadar, citing a Writers Guild directory listing Lauren LeFranc and consulting producer Semi Chellas listed in connection with a second season. A listing, not proof of approval or renewal
June 16, 2026 MeriStation/AS, citing Jeff Sneider DC Studios did not plan to continue the series; Sneider said he checked this with Warner and HBO. Attributed secondary report; neither company is quoted making the statement
August 2026, summarized in September 2026 The Direct, citing The Ankler The project is described as “in limbo.” Attributed secondary report

Read together, the record supports “unconfirmed, with conflicting reports.” It does not support a claim that Season 2 is in production, and it does not establish that the series has been canceled.

The show and its bridge into The Batman Part II

Warner Bros. Discovery’s pressroom describes The Penguin as an eight-episode DC Studios drama that continues The Batman crime saga. Its first season was always designed as a limited series. Lauren LeFranc has said the purpose was to launch Oz into the second Batman film, The Batman Part II, rather than to set up an open-ended run.

That framing matters for the renewal question. A limited series with a built-in handoff into a film has a different decision point than a show planned to continue indefinitely. The series also received 24 limited-series Emmy nominations, according to GamesRadar’s August 2025 report. That attention explains some of the continued interest, but it does not indicate whether HBO will order more episodes.

What Colin Farrell has said

“I’m in no rush”

In a Variety interview at the 2025 SAG Awards, reported in February 2025, Farrell said, “I don’t want it. I don’t not want it,” and, “So I’m in no rush. I have no deep desire to do it.” He added that he would be open to it if the team came up with something that worked alongside Matt Reeves’s cinematic universe.

The condition he set

TheWrap separately reported his conditional openness: “if they came up with an idea for a second season that was really strong, and we all felt compelled to continue to explore the character of Oz in that way, then for sure.”

Both statements show a conditional position. “Farrell refuses” and “Farrell confirms” each overstate what he said. He has not ruled out a return, and he has not committed to one.

What the producers and showrunner have said

The statements below are from 2025. They describe the status at the time they were made, not a 2026 update.

  • Dylan Clark, January 2025: “If we could come up with an idea for what a second season might be, there’s a chance that [HBO CEO] Casey Bloys and the HBO team would want to pursue that.”
  • Matt Reeves, as quoted in the same report: He and the team were talking with showrunner Lauren LeFranc about another season. That was discussion, not an order.
  • Lauren LeFranc, August 2025: “There’s no current status update.” She also said “The intention of our first season always was, we’re launching Oz into the second film,” and that she and Farrell would need to feel confident they could top the first season before continuing.
  • Peter Safran and James Gunn, DC Studios co-chiefs, 2025 SAG Awards: “We don’t know. … There are a lot of moving pieces — probably most important Colin himself.” Gunn added: “And 800 pounds of makeup.”

The 2026 reports and why they conflict

“Not planned” (June 2026)

On June 16, 2026, MeriStation/AS reported that DC Studios did not plan to continue the series. The claim was attributed to Jeff Sneider, who said he had checked it with Warner and HBO. The report does not quote either company making the statement itself.

A Writers Guild listing (May 2026)

On May 8, 2026, GamesRadar reported a Writers Guild directory listing that connected LeFranc and Semi Chellas with a second season. A listing can show that writing or development work is in progress. It does not show approval, production, or renewal, and GamesRadar noted that the listing did not make a follow-up certain.

“In limbo” (August 2026)

A September 2026 article from The Direct summarized an August 2026 report from The Ankler, which described the project as “in limbo.” The Direct also quoted Cristin Milioti saying she had no new information and would return if asked.

What would count as an official answer

A renewal, a production start, or a cancellation would come from HBO or DC Studios. Treat anything else as reporting until one of the following appears:

  • A formal renewal or order announced by HBO, or a statement on the official press channels of HBO or DC Studios.
  • A named statement from Farrell, LeFranc, or the DC Studios co-chiefs confirming a story and a start date, rather than a hypothetical.
  • Casting, writer, or production news issued by the companies themselves.
  • A direct cancellation statement. Secondary reports alone do not establish cancellation.

Until one of these arrives, the most accurate reading is that Season 2 is possible, unconfirmed, and dependent on a story the creative team has not yet publicly described.
