Willie Nelson missed the opening weekend of the 2024 Outlaw Music Festival tour in June 2024 because he was unwell. His team said that doctors had advised him to rest, and that he was expected to make a quick recovery and rejoin the tour the following week. The illness was not named in the statement, so no diagnosis is publicly confirmed in the coverage of the event.
What happened
Nelson was unable to perform during the first weekend of the 2024 Outlaw Music Festival tour. ABC News reported on June 22, 2024, that a statement posted to Nelson’s X account said he was not feeling well and, on doctors’ orders, had been advised to rest for four days. The statement described the expected outcome as a quick recovery and a return to the tour the next week.
Which dates were affected
The absence covered three scheduled stops in the opening weekend of June 21 to 23, 2024:
| Scheduled date | City | Status in the reporting |
|---|---|---|
| June 21, 2024 | Alpharetta, Georgia | Nelson did not perform |
| June 22, 2024 | Charlotte, North Carolina | Nelson did not perform |
| June 23, 2024 | Raleigh, North Carolina | Nelson did not perform |
For these dates, ABC News reported that Nelson’s son Lukas Nelson and several guests were expected to perform a special set of Willie Nelson classics and other songs. The other artists on the bills were still expected to play.

What the statement said
ABC News reproduced the statement, which read: “We regret to inform you that Willie Nelson is not feeling well and, per doctor’s orders, has been advised to rest for the next four days,” followed by: “He is expected to make a quick recovery and join the Outlaw Music Festival tour next week.”
The statement was issued in the name of Nelson’s team and posted to his X account. It does not name an individual speaker, and it does not describe the illness.

What is and is not established
- Established by the reporting: Nelson missed the June 21 to 23, 2024 dates; the cause was given as illness, with doctors advising four days of rest; Lukas Nelson and guests were slated to cover his songs.
- Expressed as an expectation, not a confirmed fact: that Nelson would rejoin the tour the following week. The ABC News report records this expectation but does not independently verify the exact date he returned to the stage.
- Not disclosed: any diagnosis or medical detail. Coverage should not be read as naming or implying a specific condition.
Why the event is worth knowing about
Nelson’s absence was a short, planned-around break rather than a cancelled tour. The statement framed it as a scheduled rest period with a set return, which is why the story centered on who would fill the gap on stage rather than on whether the tour would continue. For fans who bought tickets for those three cities, the reporting indicated that the shows were still going ahead with the Nelson family and guests performing his material.
