The reviewed sources do not establish that The Expendables 5 has been greenlit or that Jason Statham will lead it. Statham’s Lee Christmas took a prominent role in the fourth film, but that is not a casting or leadership announcement for a sequel.
Is The Expendables 5 confirmed?
No fifth film is confirmed by the available statements. In a September 22, 2023 interview, director Scott Waugh said a sequel would depend on whether audiences wanted one, with box-office performance helping show whether a fan base existed. He said he would be glad to be involved if a fifth film came about, but did not announce that it was in development.

Producer Les Weldon made a similar point in comments reported on September 29, 2023: the fans would decide whether there would be another film, and the filmmakers would need to deliver the kind of experience audiences expect. Those comments are from 2023, not a fresh studio update. Neither source establishes a greenlight, cast, production schedule, or release date. Waugh’s Uproxx interview and ComicBook.com’s report on Weldon’s comments describe the sequel as conditional.
Why is Jason Statham seen as a possible lead?
Expend4bles gives Lee Christmas a central revenge-and-redemption story. Waugh described the fourth film as one that “really leans on Lee Christmas’s character.” That makes a larger role for Statham in a future installment plausible, but it establishes only what the fourth film did—not who would lead a fifth.

Has Lee Christmas replaced Barney Ross as the franchise leader?
No confirmed handoff has been announced. The fourth film’s emphasis on Christmas can fuel speculation about the series’ direction, but the available comments do not name Statham as the next leader or say that Sylvester Stallone’s Barney Ross has been replaced. There is no confirmed fifth-film lineup to compare.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the best-supported answer?
Statham is a plausible choice if the franchise continues, but his leadership remains unconfirmed. The evidence supports a distinction: Christmas received a prominent arc in the fourth film, while both Waugh and Weldon described another installment as dependent on audience interest. The official Expend4bles website provides a home-viewing route for the existing film; it does not establish a sequel or a particular disc edition.
