The admission exposes a longstanding hurt: Glinda has wanted to be magical, but is not. Fox says the book’s response is not a sudden transformation. It marks the beginning of Glinda’s work.
Why does the Grimmerie open for Glinda?
Fox reads the moment as an emotional turning point rather than a reward for gaining power. When Elphaba gives Glinda the Grimmerie, Glinda confesses that she cannot read it. Fox describes that admission to her best friend as painful because it reveals a core vulnerability Glinda has carried for a long time.
In an interview with Susan Kouguell published December 8, 2025, Fox put the distinction plainly: “The Grimmerie isn’t saying, now you’re magic.” She continues: “It is saying, now you get to start the work; this is just the beginning of the work.” In her reading, the book opening makes room for Glinda to begin, not proof that she has suddenly acquired magic.
How does the moment fit Glinda’s character arc?
Fox connects the scene to Glinda’s earlier complicity and failure to act. The opening comes after a reckoning with those choices, as Glinda makes a belated effort to do what is right. Fox’s point is that acting late can still matter; the book’s opening signals a beginning in that moral movement, not a simple power-up.

Is Fox’s explanation the only interpretation?
No. Fox says she and co-writer Winnie Holzman have somewhat different views about why the Grimmerie opens. Fox’s account should therefore be understood as her interpretation, not as a unanimously stated explanation from both writers. The interview does not establish Holzman’s specific view.
Does Glinda become magical when the book opens?
Fox explicitly says the opening does not mean “now you’re magic.” Her explanation is about Glinda being able to start the work. The moment should not be treated as establishing new rules about Glinda’s magical abilities: Fox has discussed the films’ magical rules as questions considered during adaptation, but that does not resolve every question about what Glinda can do.

Why the scene is more than a magical reveal
Fox discusses the films as adaptations shaped to deepen character and story for the screen. Her explanation frames the Grimmerie scene around Glinda’s vulnerability and moral choices, rather than as a standalone mechanical reveal about how the book works. That is the distinction her interpretation supports: what the moment means for Glinda, not a complete new rulebook for magic.
