The internet’s fixation on Tom Cruise eating popcorn started with a friendly fan exchange at a London screening in May 2025, but it grew because of an older clip. Social media users paired that exchange with footage of Cruise eating popcorn at a 2018 screening of Mission: Impossible — Fallout, and the unusual way he eats became the thing people pointed to. When asked about the clip, Cruise said he was in fact eating popcorn.
How the 2025 exchange started
The renewed attention came during the promotional run for Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning. Us Weekly, reporting on May 23, 2025, describes the sequence below.
- The London screening. Cruise noticed that an audience member had finished their popcorn and encouraged them to go get more. It was a light, friendly moment, not a stunt.
- The older clip joins it. A social media user posted a clip of Cruise eating popcorn at a Mission: Impossible — Fallout screening in 2018. Pairing the two gave the discussion a second, visually distinctive moment.
- Cruise is asked about it. On The Pat McAfee Show, the host, Darius Butler, asked whether Cruise was really eating popcorn. Cruise laughed and replied: “Man, I’m eating popcorn.” The date of that appearance is not stated in the coverage cited here.
Where the eating clip came from
The footage is from a 2018 Mission: Impossible — Fallout screening. The 2025 fan interaction and the 2018 clip are separate moments that users linked together. Seven years separate them, and the coverage does not show that either moment was staged for the other.
Why the clip caught on
The sources establish the sequence but do not measure why people shared it. The following is an interpretation of that sequence, not a finding about audience behavior.

- The story is easy to grasp. A famous actor encourages a fan to get more popcorn. Nothing needs context to follow it.
- The eating style is visible at a glance. Viewers can react to the clip in a few seconds, which suits quick sharing.
- The reaction gave people a question to answer. Once Cruise confirmed he was really eating popcorn, the joke had a clear punchline that readers could repeat.
The popcorn bucket connection
Popcorn is also tied to a physical product category. TIME, reporting on November 26, 2024, covered the rise of novelty movie popcorn buckets and said Cruise had been involved in guiding a Mission: Impossible bucket design planned for 2025. That article describes a planned design, and the release details are not covered here. Cruise is not shown using or endorsing any bucket in the reporting cited for this piece.

What the reporting does and does not establish
- Established: the fan exchange in May 2025, the 2018 Fallout screening clip, and Cruise’s on-air confirmation that he was eating popcorn.
- Not established: view counts, reach, or any engagement figure. The word “viral” is used loosely in coverage and is not backed by a number here.
- Not established: that the public as a whole holds a particular view of the clip. The evidence describes one social media episode and the coverage that followed it.
