James Comey’s wife is Patrice L. Comey, born Patrice Failor. Her name appears in his 2003 Senate questionnaire, and he introduced her as his wife at his 2013 FBI director confirmation hearing. Public sources give little more about her personal life, and none of the sources reviewed confirm her current status, a marriage date, or her present occupation.
How her name is documented
The most precise name in an official record is “Patrice L. Comey (nee Failor).” It appears in the personal questionnaire Comey filed in 2003 when he was nominated for deputy attorney general. That questionnaire was later published in a 2004 Senate hearing record, which is the U.S. Government Publishing Office version most readers will find. The form describes Patrice at that time as a homemaker with five dependent children. That description reflects 2003 and should not be read as her current occupation.
What Comey said in 2013
At his 2013 confirmation hearing for FBI director, Comey introduced his wife in the room. The transcript records him saying:
“Behind me to my left is my wife, Patrice, whom Senator Blumenthal mentioned, the love of my life, and all that is good about me is her fault.”

In the same hearing he said he had five children. The hearing record is the primary source for both the introduction and the family count.
Foster parenting, as described in the hearing
Senator Richard Blumenthal, who had raised the family’s background during the hearing, said the Comeys were licensed foster parents in Connecticut and had cared for infants and toddlers in that role. The statement is Blumenthal’s, recorded in the 2013 transcript. It describes the family’s activity as of 2013 and does not establish anything about their current arrangements.

Family details reported by ABC News in 2018
An ABC News report published April 15, 2018, gave the family account that was current at that time. According to the report, the couple lost their son Collin at a very early age and went on to have four daughters. Taken together with the five children Comey cited in 2013, that makes five children in total, including Collin.
The same ABC coverage quoted Comey recalling advice Patrice gave him during his work on interrogation policy: “Don’t be the torture guy.” The report presents this as Comey’s account of what she told him. It is not a separately recorded interview with Patrice, and readers should attribute it to Comey’s recollection as reported by ABC.

What the public record does not establish
- Whether Comey and Patrice are still married as of today. The most recent source reviewed is from 2018.
- The date of their marriage.
- Patrice’s current occupation or any public role of her own.
- Any current family arrangements, including foster placements, beyond what the 2013 hearing describes.
Readers looking for a confirmed present-day status should check current reporting from a major news outlet, since the sources above do not settle it.
