Andrew Terraciano played Sean on Blue Bloods; Mika Amonsen plays him on Boston Blue.
What the showrunner said about the recasting
Co-showrunner Brandon Margolis described the decision as a creative choice tied to a shift in both characters’ lives. Sean has joined the family’s law-enforcement business, and Danny is now the father of a cop—a role Margolis said Danny had not occupied before.

In comments reported by Country Living, Margolis said the team saw “an organic opportunity to bring in a new performance with a new energy” to dramatize that change. He also emphasized that Sean remains the same character and that his relationship with Danny continues, even as the circumstances around them are different. Margolis’s explanation was reported by Country Living from an interview with Variety.

How the new series sets up Sean and Danny’s story
CBS’s official premise places Danny in the Boston Police Department and says he hopes to reconnect with Sean in Boston. That setup gives the series room to explore the father-son relationship in a new setting, with Sean’s police career changing how Danny experiences the family business.

Did Andrew Terraciano explain why he did not return?
Terraciano later recalled that he heard producers might be looking for a different Sean, and that Donnie Wahlberg called him shortly afterward. TVLine reported this account from Terraciano’s interview with Us Weekly. It offers his recollection of how he learned about the recasting; it is not a production explanation for the decision.
