They canceled the large gathering in 2020 because COVID-19 cases were rising in California, and pandemic-era celebrations were scaled back. Later coverage describes the tradition continuing, though not necessarily as the same elaborate party.
Why did the Kardashians cancel their Christmas Eve party?
In December 2020, Khloé Kardashian said the family would not hold its usual Christmas Eve party because COVID-19 cases in California were rising. She described health and safety as the priority. The Los Angeles Times quoted her post: “The Covid cases are getting out of control in CA. So we decided that we’re not doing a Christmas Eve party this year.” She added that taking the pandemic seriously was a must. (Los Angeles Times)

Khloé also said the family would skip its annual Christmas photo. “We have not done anything. No Christmas photos and no Christmas Eve party this year. Covid has taken over,” she told the Times. The stated reason was pandemic safety—not a publicly announced decision based on cost, backlash or waning interest.
Did they stop holding the party for good?
No. The 2020 cancellation marked a break in the family’s long-running tradition, not a confirmed permanent end. Khloé recalled that it was the first year without a party since 1978, adding “I believe.” Kris Jenner also identified 1978 as the tradition’s start in a later interview, describing its beginnings as a small family gathering that grew over time. How the celebrations changed after 2020
2021: The elaborate bash was reportedly scaled back
TMZ reported in December 2021, citing unnamed sources, that the family planned to forgo the elaborate party for a second year amid rising COVID-19 cases. The report said Kris would still gather with her daughters and grandchildren. That account describes a smaller family gathering, rather than a direct public announcement that all Christmas Eve celebrations had stopped. (TMZ)
Later years: The tradition continued
Marie Claire reported in 2025 that the family planned to celebrate at one of their homes. Kris said the gathering might be smaller following a large celebration for her 70th birthday. That later account is further evidence that the tradition continued, even as its scale and setting could change. (Marie Claire)

How large was the party before the pandemic?
The event had grown well beyond the small family gathering Kris described at its start. Hosting duties shifted among family members in later years: Kourtney Kardashian hosted in 2019, while Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West hosted in 2018. The Los Angeles Times relayed People’s estimate of $440,000 for the 2019 party and said the 2018 event may have cost $1.3 million. These were reported estimates, not confirmed spending figures, and they do not establish why the family canceled in 2020. (Los Angeles Times)
