HMV stands for His Master’s Voice. The phrase comes from a painting of a dog named Nipper listening to a phonograph, and the British company that used the picture as its trademark gave the name to the brand. Public usage later shortened the full phrase to the three letters.
What the three letters stand for
The initials are shorthand for the title of a painting by Francis Barraud. The Huguenot Museum’s account of the picture says the British company registered the image together with the title “His Master’s Voice” as trademarks in 1910, and that the phrase then became the company’s brand name. Within common usage, the full phrase was soon reduced to HMV. The EMI Archive Trust also links the painting’s title, the trademark, and Nipper in its own archival account of the company (EMI Archive Trust).
The painting behind the name
Nipper, the dog in the picture
The painting shows Nipper, a terrier associated with Barraud’s family, with his head tilted toward the horn of a phonograph. According to the Huguenot Museum, Nipper first belonged to Francis Barraud’s elder brother, Mark. When Mark died, Francis inherited the dog. Nipper had died before Barraud painted him, so the picture was built from the dog’s memory and Barraud’s own sketches rather than a sitting in front of the machine. The museum’s account is the main source for these details (Huguenot Museum).
Barraud’s idea for the title
Barraud described the concept in terms that explain the title’s wording. As reproduced by the Huguenot Museum, he wrote: “It suddenly occurred to me that to have my dog listening to the phonograph, with an intelligent and rather puzzled expression, and call it ‘His Master’s Voice’, would make an excellent subject”. The quotation records his stated intention for the painting. It does not, on its own, document every later step in the trademark or company history.

From painting to trademark
The painting became a commercial emblem in a short sequence of steps. The table below lists the dated milestones that the sources support, and it separates the origin of the phrase from the later retail history that carries the same name.

The table shows two separate threads. The first is the 1910 trademark, which is the moment the picture’s title became a brand. The second is the retail chain, whose first shop opened eleven years later. The address is a milestone in the shop’s history, not the reason the name exists.

Who operates HMV today
The name in the UK is now used by a retailer that is distinct from the early Gramophone Company and the trademark’s origin. HMV’s official company information states that the UK HMV name is a trading name of Sunrise Records and Entertainment Limited (HMV company information). Readers should treat the trademark story and the current company as connected by name rather than by an unbroken corporate identity. The company page is the authority for the present operator, and the historical account is the authority for the origin of the phrase.

- The inspiration. The commonly told account presents Barraud’s painting as the direct source of the phrase. The Huguenot Museum notes that other explanations for the phrase’s inspiration have been discussed, so the painting should be read as the standard account rather than a proven single origin.
- The shop’s name. The 1921 date refers to the retail chain’s first shop. It does not show that the company used the initials HMV at the time the painting was made.
- Historical merchandise. The Huguenot account also describes Nipper-themed items such as needle tins. Those are historical objects; the source does not establish that they are sold today.
In short, HMV is the abbreviation of His Master’s Voice, a phrase taken from a painting of Nipper that the British company registered as a trademark in 1910. The retail business that carries the name today is a later and separate chapter of that story.
