Music is already a social, emotional and reward-rich activity, and some psychoactive substances change how people hear sound, feel emotion, remember and find meaning in it. The brain systems involved in music and in some drug effects also overlap, particularly in reward and movement. Culture and setting, from particular scenes and venues to shared identities, shape which people meet which music and which substances. The studies behind each explanation measure different things, so they support different conclusions.
Four explanations to keep apart
- Music is already rewarding and social. Listening is often shared and emotionally charged, so it naturally sits alongside other pleasurable or intense experiences.
- Substances change the listening experience. Psychedelics and cannabis can alter perception, emotion, memory and the sense of meaning, which can change how music feels.
- Reward and movement systems overlap. Groove, the pleasurable urge to move to music, depends on rhythmic expectation, and drug-related changes to reward systems may alter it.
- Culture and setting pair them. Scenes, rituals, venues and identities bring particular music and particular substances together. This is an association in social data, not a biological link.
These explanations can all be true at once, but they rest on different evidence. The first three draw on laboratory experiments and reviews; the last draws on survey and venue data.
How psychedelics change the way the brain follows music
Music unfolds over time. Tonal patterns build, shift and resolve, and the brain keeps predicting what comes next. A 2017 study indexed in PubMed tested how LSD alters that process in 25 healthy adults, who listened to music after three conditions: placebo, LSD, and LSD taken after ketanserin, a 5-HT2A receptor blocker.
LSD changed how the brain tracked the changing tonal structure of music. The affected regions included those involved in auditory and musical processing, as well as regions tied to memory, emotion and self-referential processing. The study’s title attributes the change to 5-HT2A receptor signaling, which is what the ketanserin condition was designed to test. The authors suggest this signaling may help explain the increased emotionality, connectedness and meaningfulness often reported during psychedelic music listening. That is a mechanistic clue from one small, controlled laboratory study, not a complete account of what people experience with psychedelics and music.

A predictive-processing account
A 2023 review in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences by Jerotic and colleagues places this within a wider picture. Music and psychedelics both relate to hierarchically organized brain processes, and psychedelics may alter predictive processing, the brain’s ongoing use of expectations to interpret incoming sound. The authors describe the evidence on the mechanistic overlap between the two as limited, so this is a plausible framework rather than an established one.
Does cannabis make music feel better?
The answer depends on which measure is used. A 2017 study in the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology tested 16 cannabis users under placebo and two cannabis conditions, one without cannabidiol (CBD) and one containing it. The table compares each cannabis condition with placebo.

| Measure | Cannabis without cannabidiol, compared with placebo | Cannabis with cannabidiol, compared with placebo |
|---|---|---|
| Brain responses to music in auditory and reward/emotion-related regions | Dampened in several regions | No difference on the measured fMRI outcomes |
| Reported desire to listen to music | Increased | Increased |
| Reported sound perception | Enhanced | Enhanced |
Brain responses moved one way while what participants reported moved another, which is why “cannabis makes music better” is not an accurate summary. The sample was small, and the findings concern these preparations and these outcomes. They do not show how cannabis affects all users or all products.
Groove: why musical complexity matters
Groove is the pleasurable urge to move in response to music, and it links rhythmic expectation with movement. A 2025 study compared people with cocaine or heroin use disorders with nonusers, using music that varied in complexity. The table summarizes the pattern.

|---|---|---|
| High rhythmic and harmonic complexity | Stronger groove response | Weaker groove response |
| Moderate complexity | Similar response | Similar response |
The authors suggest that altered reward sensitivity may change how much stimulation music needs before it engages reward. The finding concerns groove and complexity in one musical task. It is not evidence that addiction makes music generally more enjoyable.
Why music appears in psychedelic therapy
Music is commonly used in psychedelic therapy studies to guide or support the acute experience. A 2018 review, “Psychedelics and music: neuroscience and therapeutic implications,” by Barrett, Preller and Kaelen, describes possible support for three things:
Rank #4
- Wireless Bluetooth streaming
- 12 hours of playtime
- IPX7 waterproof
- Pair multiple speakers with party boost
- Premium JBL sound quality
- emotionality during the experience
- mental imagery
- meaning-making
The same review says more rigorous studies are needed to identify music’s contribution to clinical outcomes. Including music in a protocol is a design choice. It does not, by itself, show that music adds a treatment effect.

A 2014 study, “Taste clusters of music and drugs: evidence from three analytic levels,” combined three kinds of data: aggregate radio-market listening patterns, individual genre preferences and substance use from a nationally representative youth survey, and arrest and seizure data from a concert venue. Its analyses reported genre- and substance-specific associations. Rock and hip-hop showed higher substance-use associations, while pop and religious music showed lower ones.

For those who demand the purest fidelity, the X10 MAX makes true lossless playback possible. Simply connect directly to your laptop or audio device using the USB-A port. This direct digital connection bypasses compression, allowing you to hear the music exactly as the artist intended. To embark on this auditory journey, ensure you're playing compatible lossless audio files or streaming from a supported service.
What this kind of data can and cannot tell you
- It describes patterns in three specific datasets, and the study dates from 2014.
- Association is not causation. The data do not show that music leads to drug use.
- Not every listener of a genre fits the pattern, and no genre is inherently linked to any substance.
Is music a drug?
A 2024 review by Reybrouck and Van Dyck, “Is music a drug? How music listening may trigger neurochemical responses in the brain,” compares some neurochemical and psychological responses to music listening with responses associated with psychoactive substances. That comparison helps explain why people call music a “drug” metaphorically. It does not make music and psychoactive drugs interchangeable.
Quick Recap
What the evidence cannot yet answer
- How often drugs and music go together. No reliable population-level figure for how often people combine drug use with music is established, so the frequency implied by the question is not measured.
- Whether the LSD finding explains everyday psychedelic listening. The tonal-tracking result comes from one small laboratory study, and its link to the emotional and meaning-related effects people report outside the lab remains a hypothesis.
- Whether reward sensitivity explains the groove result. The 2025 study points to reward sensitivity as a likely factor, but the mechanism behind the difference in groove responses is still an interpretation.
