Drake was brought up by the defense of Dedrick Williams, one of the men charged in XXXTentacion’s killing. Williams’s lawyer cited an alleged online feud and argued that investigators had not explored Drake as a possible alternative lead. The defense sought to question Drake in a deposition, but on February 24, 2023, the judge ruled he would not be deposed in the trial. That defense argument was not proof that Drake was involved.

Why did the defense bring up Drake?

During pretrial proceedings, Williams’s attorney, Mauricio Padilla, pointed to an alleged feud between Drake and XXXTentacion as a reason to explore other possible leads. The defense also criticized investigators for not asking Drake about the alleged feud. Those claims represented the defense’s theory about the investigation; they were not findings by the court. The Los Angeles Times reported on the dispute, and WPLG Local 10 covered the pretrial hearing.

At that hearing, Judge Michael Usan cautioned that a feud by itself was not enough to call rappers as witnesses. The defense’s request was about whether Drake should be questioned as a potential witness, not a prosecution accusation that he had committed a crime.

What happened with the deposition?

  1. The defense subpoenaed Drake for a virtual deposition. A scheduled session did not go forward, and a judge later ordered him to appear for another deposition, according to the Los Angeles Times.
  2. Drake’s lawyer challenged the order.
  3. On February 24, 2023, Judge Usan ruled that Drake would not be deposed in the trial. WPLG Local 10 reported the ruling.

So, although headlines described Drake as being “questioned,” the relevant event was a defense request for a deposition. He did not end up being deposed in the trial under the judge’s ruling.

Was Drake accused of involvement in the killing?

The cited reporting describes Drake as a potential witness raised by Williams’s defense, not as one of the defendants. It does not establish that he participated in, arranged, or knew in advance about the killing. The Associated Press’s account of jury selection describes the defense’s suggestions about other possible motives or suspects; that framing is distinct from proof of a person’s involvement.

An alleged feud or online speculation is not evidence by itself that someone took part in a murder. The procedural outcome was that the judge would not allow the requested deposition in the trial.
