The sources available do not identify a specific reason for the long wait.
Is Young Guns 3 happening?
Yes. New Mexico’s Film Office lists Young Guns 3: Dead or Alive as a feature in pre-production, and the state announced the project in March 2025. That confirms an active announced production, not that cameras have started or that a release date has been set. New Mexico Film Office project listing

The latest dated update cited here, a September 29, 2026 report, says Kiefer Sutherland described a completed script circulating among original cast members. It also says no shooting date had been confirmed. This is a report about the script’s status, not confirmation that filming is imminent. ComingSoon, September 29, 2026
Who is returning for Young Guns 3?
The official New Mexico announcement names Emilio Estevez, Lou Diamond Phillips and Christian Slater. It explicitly says Estevez will direct and return as Billy the Kid. Phillips and Slater are announced cast members, but the announcement does not specify their characters. New Mexico Film Office announcement

Sutherland has discussed the script, but the cited September 2026 report does not confirm that he has signed on as a cast member. He should not be counted among the officially announced returning cast on that basis alone.
The announced creative team also includes writers Estevez and John Fusco, with Morgan Creek named as producer. The state announcement identifies New Mexico as the filming location.

What is the story of Young Guns 3: Dead or Alive?
The confirmed high-level premise is that the film will introduce “a new generation of regulators,” according to the New Mexico Film Office. The Associated Press reported at the March 2025 announcement that the plot was under wraps, and the cited updates do not disclose a fuller synopsis. Associated Press, March 13, 2025
In July 2025, Phillips described the project as featuring himself and Slater, with Estevez directing and playing Billy, and said Estevez co-wrote the script with Fusco. His comments align with the announced team, but do not reveal the story. ComingSoon, July 28, 2025

Why is Young Guns 3 delayed?
No specific cause is established by the cited sources. At the March 2025 announcement, the Associated Press reported that some work was underway, but officials had not provided a camera start date. In July 2025, Phillips said he hoped filming would happen in late September, October or November, and that Estevez had scouted original locations in New Mexico. That was an expectation, not confirmation that the shoot took place. The September 2026 update still reported no confirmed shooting date.
So the supportable explanation is limited: the project has taken longer than the early hoped-for window, while its production schedule remains unconfirmed. The available reporting does not establish that rights, financing, cast scheduling or any other single factor caused the delay.

Where will it be filmed, and when?
New Mexico is the announced filming location. The state and the Associated Press noted that both earlier Young Guns films were filmed there. The state announcement also anticipated that the production would employ “hundreds” of local crew members, actors and support staff; that is an estimate attributed to Steve Graham, Director of the New Mexico Film Office, not a final employment count. No confirmed start date or release date is stated in the cited reporting. Phillips’s fall 2025 window was a hope expressed before that period, not a schedule, and the later report did not confirm that production began.
