John Candy: I Like Me is the 2025 documentary behind the promise in the headline. Directed by Colin Hanks, the 1-hour-52-minute film looks back at Candy’s life and career through archival material and interviews. In a review, David Fear describes an affectionate portrait whose sadness comes from seeing the generous comic persona alongside accounts of Candy’s sensitivity, personal grief and early death. That is one critic’s response, not a guarantee of how every viewer will feel.

What is the new John Candy documentary called?

It is John Candy: I Like Me. Prime Video lists the completed film as a 2025 documentary directed by Colin Hanks and produced by Ryan Reynolds and others. The listing describes it as a portrait of Candy’s life, career and loss. See the Prime Video listing for the film.

The film followed a project announcement in 2023, when Prime Video was reported to be negotiating to acquire an untitled John Candy documentary. That announcement named Hanks as director, Reynolds as a producer and noted the Candy family’s support. The later listing identifies the finished documentary; the earlier announcement is useful context, not its current title or release information.

Why is the John Candy documentary so emotional?

David Fear’s review, republished by Rolling Stone, presents the documentary as a warm tribute rather than an exposé. Fear’s headline, “Why a New John Candy Doc Will Break Your Heart,” is a critic’s framing, not an official tagline or a claim about a universal audience reaction. He describes a film that holds the affection audiences felt for Candy beside accounts of his sensitivity and the losses in his life.

As Fear summarizes the film, interviewees speak about Candy’s tendency to please others and his emotional sensitivity. The review also recounts that Candy’s father died when he was five, and describes the documentary’s treatment of food, drink and applause in that context. These are elements and interpretations presented in the film as described by the reviewer; they should not be taken as a clinical diagnosis or proof of a settled psychological cause.

The film’s emotional contrast also comes from its use of family and set footage alongside scenes from Candy’s funeral and Dan Aykroyd’s eulogy. The documentary lets the viewer encounter both the performer’s warmth and the knowledge of his early death. Fear’s review was dated September 5, 2025, and the page republishing it is dated September 16, 2025; it places the film at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival. What does John Candy: I Like Me cover?

The documentary looks at Candy’s route from Toronto’s Second City to television and film stardom. Fear’s review traces an early Second City audition after a knee injury, then his work on SCTV and the feature films that made him familiar to broad audiences.

The review points to films including The Great Outdoors, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Uncle Buck and Cool Runnings. Those performances supply context for the public comic persona the documentary revisits; the documentary is a retrospective, not a replacement for the scripted comedies themselves.

How does the documentary get intimate access?

Prime Video says that people who knew Candy share his story “in their own words, through never-before-seen archival footage, imagery, and interviews.” The listing confirms the kinds of material the service highlights, but it does not identify every archive used in the finished film. The 2023 project announcement had already reported the family’s support and plans to draw on home videos, archives and interviews.

That combination helps the portrait move between public performance and private memory: comedy scenes and set footage sit beside family material, interviews and the funeral scenes described in Fear’s review. The access is part of the film’s approach, while the meaning assigned to it remains a matter of interpretation.

Is the documentary a substitute for watching John Candy’s comedies?

No. The documentary is a retrospective built around interviews and archival material; films such as Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Uncle Buck and Cool Runnings are scripted performances. The documentary offers context for Candy’s career and public image, while the comedies let viewers experience the work itself. The sources cited here do not establish that those films are available on Prime Video or any other shared service.
