Kattappa kills Amarendra Baahubali because Sivagami orders him to do so. Bhallaladeva’s political scheme turns Sivagami against Amarendra, and Kattappa carries out her command during a crisis in the kingdom. Actor Sathyaraj’s much-quoted answer that he was paid and told by director S. S. Rajamouli to do it was a joke at the film’s 2017 pre-release event—not the story’s explanation.
What happens in the story?
Kattappa (also rendered Katappa) kills Amarendra Baahubali after Sivagami gives the order. Bhallaladeva’s maneuvering has made Sivagami believe Amarendra is a threat, setting the killing in motion amid a political crisis. Kattappa’s act is therefore not a personal decision to betray Baahubali: he carries out the command of the queen he serves.

The first film ended with the question of why Kattappa killed Baahubali, making it the central hook for the sequel. But director S. S. Rajamouli argued that the more revealing question was how events reached that point. Speaking to NDTV, he said, “The question itself is not important. The actual question is how did it come to the point that Katappa killed Baahubali?” That framing points to Bhallaladeva’s political maneuvering and Sivagami’s order, rather than treating the killing as an isolated act.
What did Sathyaraj say—and why?
At the Baahubali 2 pre-release event in Hyderabad in 2017, Sathyaraj, the actor who plays Kattappa, answered the familiar question with a joke. As India Today reported, he said: “My director Rajamouli asked me to kill Baahubali, and I obliged.” He also joked that producer Shobu paid him well to kill Prabhas, adding that otherwise he would not kill Prabhas, whom he called his darling since Mirchi.

The quip played on the gap between actor and character: Sathyaraj could say he followed his director’s instruction because he was acting in a film, while Kattappa’s action has an in-story cause. The Indian Express event report also records Sathyaraj’s joke that he could not otherwise kill Prabhas. Neither version is the plot’s answer.

Rajamouli described the two installments as parts of one story that could not fit into a single film. “Baahubali is not a sequel. It is one story which we couldn’t fit in one movie, so we made it into two movies,” he told NDTV. The cliffhanger asks what Kattappa did; the second film supplies the chain of political choices and orders that explains how it happened.
What about the supposed 2016 “reveal”?
A purported early explanation appeared in The News Minute’s article titled “Exclusively Revealed: Why Kattapa killed Baahubali”. The article was an April Fools’ joke and explicitly said its plot account was fake. It should not be treated as a genuine spoiler or alternate explanation.
