Richard Gere and Alejandra Silva moved their family to Madrid in November 2024 for a mix of family, cultural and charitable reasons. Gere described the move as a fair turn after Silva had spent years living with him in the United States; Silva also pointed to their work with the homelessness nonprofit Hogar Sí. The move was not permanent: in October 2025, Gere said the family was back in the United States.
Why did Richard Gere and Alejandra Silva move to Madrid?
A reciprocal decision centered on Silva’s home
Gere said the move was a way to spend time in Silva’s home country after she had lived with him in the United States for years. In an interview with El País in April 2024, he described it as a matter of fairness: “She was very generous in giving me six years living in my world, so I think it’s fair that I give her at least another six living in hers.”
Madrid brought Silva closer to her family and longtime friends, as well as the culture and way of life she knew. Gere also described the move as a major adventure and spoke warmly about Spain. In November 2024, the couple began what he presented as a multi-year family chapter there; he noted that their children were bilingual.
Shared charitable work
The couple’s activism was another stated reason for being in Madrid. In January 2025, Silva told Cadena SER that they were there to serve on the board of Hogar Sí, a Spanish organization working to end homelessness. She described their work with foundations, including Hogar Sí and Open Arms, as a shared interest and part of what brought them to Spain.

How long did they plan to stay?
At first, the stay sounded likely to last several years. In May 2025, Silva said they were happy in Madrid and expected to remain there for a few years. She also noted that the children had school and friends in the city. That was the plan she described at the time, not a guarantee of a permanent move.
In February 2025, Gere received the Goya International Award and called Spain his “new home,” as reported by El País. The remark reflected his connection to Spain during that period; it did not establish that the family would live there permanently.

Did Richard Gere move back to the United States?
Yes. In October 2025, Gere said the family had returned to the United States after roughly a year in Spain. El País reported his confirmation to ¡HOLA!/Hello!: “In fact, we’re already back here.” He spoke positively about their time in Spain and said Silva had been happy there with her family, friends, culture, city and food.
The available reporting does not give a detailed reason for the return, so it would be speculation to attribute it to the children’s schooling, work, or any other particular cause. In November 2025, Silva said Spain would remain a place the family returned to, according to the same El País follow-up. These reports describe the family’s circumstances at that time; they do not establish where they live today.
