Why There Won’t Be an Andor Season 3: Why the Series Ended After Two Seasons

Andor ended after two seasons by design: the production schedule made five seasons impractical, and season 2 completes the story leading into Rogue One.

Andor was not cancelled. Creator and showrunner Tony Gilroy brought it to a planned close after two seasons because the original five-season story would have taken too long to produce. The revised second season covers the remaining years before Rogue One and ends as Cassian Andor and K-2SO head toward the film’s opening events.

Was Andor cancelled?

No. The series ended after two seasons as a deliberate change to its original plan, not because Disney cancelled it. The story was reshaped to reach its established endpoint: the events leading directly into Rogue One.

Why did the original five-season plan change?

When Andor was announced in 2018, the plan was for five seasons of about 12 episodes each, with every season covering one of the five years before Rogue One. As reported by GamesRadar and Screen Rant in 2025, Gilroy later said that producing a season took about two and a half years. He put the practical problem plainly: “You just couldn’t possibly physically make five years of the show.”

The scale of the production became clear while season 1 was being filmed. Gilroy, Diego Luna and executive producer Sanne Wohlenberg worked out a different structure, and Disney agreed to it. Instead of making three more seasons, they kept the 12-episode format and used season 2 to cover four years in four blocks of three episodes. That let the series complete its intended journey without requiring five separate seasons.

How does season 2 lead into Rogue One?

Season 2 compresses the final four years of the prequel timeline, with each three-episode block covering one year. Its ending brings Cassian and K-2SO to the point where they head to Kafrene, leading into Rogue One. The show therefore reaches the destination its original five-season structure was designed to reach, only by a more compact route.

Could there still be an Andor season 3?

There is no established plan for a third season. Gilroy’s comments, as reported by GamesRadar and Screen Rant, suggest that he saw no meaningful story left to tell in that format. Asked about a possible continuation, he wondered, “Well, what would it be?” and said, “I don’t know what season 3 would be.” In remarks to Backstory Magazine, he joked that it might be “a lot of jazz hands and a lot of drinking coffee”—a way of saying that continuing after the story’s endpoint could amount to filler.

Gilroy has also said he does not expect to return to Star Wars after roughly a decade working on the project. That is not the same as a formal announcement that no future Star Wars story could ever involve these characters; it does mean a third season of Andor is not something the available statements indicate is being developed.
