How their friendship and screen partnership began
Rogen and Franco met as cast members on the television series Freaks and Geeks in 1999. Rogen was 16 and Franco was 21, according to Variety’s 2026 account. They went on to appear together in films including Pineapple Express, This Is the End and The Interview. Their last project together identified in that account was The Disaster Artist in 2017.

What changed after the 2018 allegations?
In January 2018, five women, including former acting students, made allegations of sexual misconduct against Franco. The reported allegations included inappropriate or sexually exploitative conduct. They were allegations, not a court finding.
In 2019, two former students filed a class-action lawsuit alleging sex discrimination, harassment, fraudulent business practices and intimidation. The case was settled in 2021. A settlement is not a judicial finding that the allegations were proven.

That year, Rogen addressed how the allegations affected his relationship with Franco. He acknowledged that he had said in 2018 he could keep working with Franco, but told The Sunday Times, as quoted by Variety: “I also look back to that interview in 2018 where I comment that I would keep working with James, and the truth is that I have not and I do not plan to right now.” Rogen also said the allegations changed their relationship and dynamic.
In a separate comment from the same 2021 interview, quoted by the Los Angeles Times, Rogen said: “What I can say is that I despise abuse and harassment and I would never cover or conceal the actions of someone doing it, or knowingly put someone in a situation where they were around someone like that.” He also said he had no pity for himself relative to others affected.

What each man has said about the friendship
Franco’s account in 2024
In 2024, Franco told Variety he had not spoken to Rogen and believed the friendship was over. The Independent quoted him saying: “I haven’t talked to Seth. I love Seth, we had 20 great years together, but I guess it’s over. And not for lack of trying. I’ve told him how much he’s meant to me.” That describes Franco’s view; it does not establish what happened privately between them.
Rogen’s comments in 2025 and 2026
Asked about Franco’s remarks in February 2025, Rogen said the comment had not been on his radar and declined to elaborate, according to the Independent.
