The official anime synopsis sets the story in 1890 and describes the Steel Ball Run as the first horse-racing championship across the North American continent. Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli each pursue their own goal, form an alliance, and enter the race together.
VIZ Media’s description of Volume 1 adds the personal stakes. Johnny is a former jockey paralyzed from the waist down. He joins Gyro after witnessing a duel that briefly lets him walk again. That detail matters for the argument below, because it introduces a supernatural element at the very start of a sporting story.
Why a race makes the weirdness stand out
A transcontinental race gives the story a clear physical goal and constant forward motion. Readers know what they are following: a course, rivals, and a finish line. Against that familiar frame, the strange turns land harder. Three features do most of the work.

It also means the emotional and strategic stakes never fully line up, and that tension gives the bizarre moments something to push against.
A supernatural element inside a sporting story
The duel that briefly restores Johnny’s ability to walk is the clearest sign that the book is not a straight sports drama. Placing a supernatural event at the root of the protagonist’s motivation is the kind of move that fits the franchise’s taste for the unusual, even when the surrounding race looks ordinary.
Where the franchise’s habits show up
VIZ Media describes JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure through imaginative storylines, weird imagery, and individualistic artwork. Steel Ball Run applies those tendencies to a race narrative, which is why it reads as an expansion of the franchise’s style rather than a break from it.
