Temple Run: Oz was removed from app stores after Disney Interactive Studios closed. That is the explanation both Imangi Studios and Disney give, and it is the only reason the official record documents. Neither source gives an exact removal date, a platform-by-platform timeline, or any title-specific licensing or financial reason.

What the official explanation says

Imangi Studios, the developer, published a player support note that states: “Following the closure of Disney Interactive Studios, TR: Oz and other Disney apps were removed from the app stores.” That statement comes from Imangi Studios Player Support and is the direct link between the game’s disappearance and Disney’s decision to close its studio.

Disney’s own notice on retired games comes from Disney Games and Apps Support. It lists Temple Run: Oz among the retired titles and explains the general reasoning in one sentence: “Although the decision was difficult to make, this will allow us to focus on building new and more engaging games.” The same notice says retired titles have no planned future updates and no active product support.

Taken together, the two statements establish a sequence: Disney Interactive Studios closed, Disney retired its games, and the app-store removal followed. They do not go further than that.

What the game was

Imangi describes Temple Run: Oz as a 2013 collaboration between Imangi Studios and Disney Interactive Studios, inspired by the Disney film Oz the Great and Powerful. An archived Disney promotional page presented it as an Oz tie-in. Players ran along the Yellow Brick Road, and the game included a hot-air-balloon bonus feature.

That origin matters for understanding the removal. The game was a licensed tie-in built around a single film and a studio partnership, so it depended on Disney’s involvement in a way the core Temple Run series did not.

What the official sources do not establish

Several parts of the story are not documented in the material Imangi and Disney have published:

  • The exact removal date. No official source names the day or month the game left the stores.
  • Platform timing. The sources do not say whether iOS and Android removals happened at the same time.
  • Existing installations. Disney’s notice says some retired games may remain downloadable and playable on some platforms, but it does not make that promise for Temple Run: Oz. Whether a copy already on a phone still launches, and for how long, is not established.
  • Additional licensing or business reasons. Beyond the closure of Disney Interactive Studios, no official source describes a contract expiry, a sales figure, or a decision specific to this title.

Any article that gives a precise date, download count or revenue figure for the removal is going beyond what the publishers have said.

Explanations that are not supported

Because the record is thin, several common explanations circulate online. None is established by the official sources:

  • A policy violation. Nothing in the Imangi or Disney statements cites a store policy breach.
  • Technical incompatibility. No official source attributes the removal to device or operating-system problems.
  • Poor performance. No sales or ranking data was published in connection with the removal.
  • An expired license. Only the studio closure is documented, so a license expiry should not be presented as the cause.

Google Play’s general help material says apps can disappear because a developer removes them or because of a policy violation. That is standard store guidance and does not explain this game’s removal specifically.

Can you still play Temple Run: Oz?

Downloading it again

The official position is that the game has been retired and is no longer supported. Disney’s notice says retired titles receive no planned updates and no active product support. The removal notice from Imangi says the game was taken off app stores. Nothing in the official record indicates that it has been returned to them.

Using a copy already on your device

This is the one question the official material does not answer. Disney says some retired games may remain playable on some platforms, but it does not guarantee that for this title. If you already have it installed, it may still open, but a later operating-system update could stop it working, and no support is offered if it does. Treat any installed copy as unsupported.

Confirming the title you are looking for

Readers often find the original game and assume it is the same. The original Temple Run is a separate Imangi game, which Imangi says is available on iOS and Android, subject to device requirements. Google Play lists Temple Run by Imangi Studios. Those listings do not mean Temple Run: Oz has returned. Imangi also states that progress in the original Temple Run is stored locally rather than synced through cloud storage. That warning applies to the original game only, not to Temple Run: Oz.

Where the Oz connection still lives

The film that inspired the game, Oz the Great and Powerful, is the one piece of the Oz tie-in that the official sources confirm independently of the app. It is a reference point for the game’s theme, not a way to restore the game or play it.
