The series places that bond against a family tragedy and a violent turning point for Moriarty, so the adult enmity viewers already know reads less like a contest and more like a loss. That reading is an interpretation of the story as reported, not a confirmed statement of what the creators intended.
What the series sets up
Amazon describes the show as an “explosive re-imagining” of Sherlock’s early days. In season one, a young and defiant Sherlock is sent to Oxford, where he becomes a suspect in a murder investigation. There he meets James Moriarty and is drawn into a conspiracy. Amazon’s official series update says the case builds to a showdown that changes the course of Sherlock’s life. Prime Video’s episode description adds a link between the investigation and an accident that tore the Holmes family apart.

The essentials for viewers:
- Setting: 1870s Oxford. This is an origin-story reimagining, not a dramatization of a Conan Doyle origin.
- Season one: eight episodes, streaming exclusively on Prime Video.
- Season two: Amazon reported it in production in its July 29, 2026 update, with no release date announced in that update.
Three layers that make the origins painful
The pain builds in three layers that work together. Each one is established by the series’ own framing or by reporting on it; how they combine is the analytical part.
1. The Holmes family already carries a wound
Before Sherlock and Moriarty become rivals, the series ties Sherlock to a family accident that fractured the Holmes household. Prime Video’s description presents this as the backdrop to the investigation, so the young detective is never simply a brilliant outsider. He is a boy whose family has already been broken, which makes his later isolation feel earned rather than theatrical.

2. Sherlock and Moriarty genuinely work well together
TechRadar describes the two as close collaborators in episodes six and seven. That collaboration is the emotional core of the origin. When two sharp, lonely young men find in each other a partner who understands them, the audience invests in the partnership. Every later sign of distance then registers as a fracture in something that mattered, not as a neutral plot development.
3. Moriarty faces a pivotal, violent choice
Actor Dónal Finn, who plays Moriarty, described the episode-seven moment this way: “I think it is like a really pivotal moment in his life.” He also said of the character, “He was presented with difficult decisions and situations. You have to fight to get to where you need to be when you come from a certain place.” These remarks point to pressures and choices shaping Moriarty’s path. They do not frame the character’s violence as excusable, and the actor’s comments should be read as descriptions of the character’s circumstances, not as a moral defence of his actions or a clinical explanation of his psychology.

Why the friendship makes the rivalry hurt
The central irony is that viewers already know the adult Moriarty as Sherlock’s celebrated nemesis. Young Sherlock asks them to watch that enmity being formed through proximity and shared work. Knowing the outcome changes how every warm scene lands: the audience is waiting for the moment the partnership cracks, so the collaboration carries a sense of dread as well as affection.
This is the main reason the origins feel painful rather than merely dramatic. A rivalry we accept as the natural order of a detective story becomes, in this version, the product of choices made by two people who once trusted each other. The more convincingly the young men work together, the more their later opposition reads as a tragedy rather than a simple contest between hero and villain.
What the original canon establishes
In Arthur Conan Doyle’s original stories, Moriarty is Holmes’s nemesis. The pair’s famous confrontation takes place in “The Final Problem” (1893). The original works do not describe a youthful friendship between the two or a family trauma that drives Moriarty toward crime. Those elements are invented for the series. Associated Press reporting in 2026 notes that Conan Doyle wrote four Holmes novels and 56 short stories between 1887 and 1927.
The comparison comes down to three points:
| Element | Young Sherlock | Original Conan Doyle canon |
|---|---|---|
| Sherlock and Moriarty’s relationship | Young collaborators before they become rivals | Moriarty is Holmes’s nemesis; no youthful friendship is described |
| Origin mechanism | Holmes family accident and Moriarty’s formative, violent choices | Moriarty’s introduction as the criminal mastermind; the family trauma is not part of the original stories |
| Emotional effect | A friendship breaking down over time | A direct confrontation in “The Final Problem” (1893) |
Readers who want to test the show’s invented history against its source will find the contrast sharpest in these three areas.

What is and isn’t established
The viewership figure
Amazon reported that season one drew 45 million viewers in its first 28 days and ranked among its top 10 Prime Original Seasons of all time. This is Amazon’s own figure, not an independent audience measurement, and no independent third-party audience figure was located in the reporting reviewed here.
The creative framing
Peter Friedlander, head of global television for Amazon MGM Studios, said of the creative team: “Guy Ritchie and Matthew Parkhill have cracked the code on making Sherlock’s early years feel fresh, dangerous, and utterly addictive, and have introduced a compelling take on James Moriarty that sets the stage for what’s to come.” That is promotional language from the studio and reflects its intent for the series, not an outside assessment of the characterisation.

The limits of the emotional reading
The argument that the origins are painful is a reading of the story’s structure and performances. The synopsis, Amazon’s and Prime Video’s descriptions, and actor interviews support discussing that painful adaptation choice. They do not establish any psychological diagnosis of either character, and they do not confirm what the writers meant to achieve emotionally.
Viewers who want the story’s full weight should watch with that distinction in mind: the show’s pain comes from the collision between a friendship the audience sees working and a rivalry the audience already knows is coming.
