Naomi Osaka’s Labubu accessories at the 2025 US Open were more than playful bag charms: their names linked her custom match-day looks to tennis champions and pioneers, while Osaka has described fashion as a way to express herself and tell stories. The outfits brought personal style, fandom and tennis memory together without turning the dolls into a formal tribute Osaka has explicitly explained.
What Naomi Osaka wore at the 2025 US Open
The Women’s Tennis Association described Osaka’s red, rose-inspired custom Nike look as a sparkling jacket over a two-tiered bubble dress, with rhinestone headphones and a rose-bouquet hairpiece. She paired it with an embellished Labubu named Billie Jean Bling. A purple version of the look came with a matching doll the WTA spelled Arthur Flash. The WTA’s September 2, 2025 account said the custom outfits would not be sold in stores.
The Associated Press reported that Osaka carried a different Labubu attached to her racket bag for each of her first four US Open matches. Its list gives four names: Billie Jean Bling, La-Billie-Bu, Arthur Flashe and Althea Glitterson. The spelling differs from the WTA’s “Arthur Flash”; the two reports should not be treated as establishing one definitive version. AP also noted that the USTA gave Billie Jean Bling a printed US Open credential, but the pass could not be used with entrance-scanning machines. The AP report, published September 1, 2025, described the dolls as having varied color schemes and shiny outfits.
Who the Labubu names refer to
The names make the accessories legible as tennis references, not just collectibles. Billie Jean Bling and La-Billie-Bu evoke Billie Jean King; Arthur Flashe refers to Arthur Ashe; and Althea Glitterson invokes Althea Gibson. The name pairings place widely recognized champions alongside Gibson, a pioneering Black tennis player.

That connection gives the dolls a small but memorable storytelling role: a collectible travels with Osaka into the arena carrying a name from the sport’s history. The references are apparent in the names reported by AP, but Osaka has not, in the cited accounts, described each doll as a deliberate history lesson.
Why fashion is part of the story
Osaka has spoken about clothing as self-expression rather than an extra layer put on for appearance. In an interview with Hypebeast quoted by the WTA, she said, “It’s definitely about self-expression for me. I use fashion as an outlet. I don’t even see it as ‘putting it on.’ Obviously every outfit has a story, and this one was about a jellyfish.” That comment concerns a jellyfish-themed outfit, not the 2025 US Open rose look, but it helps explain why a custom entrance look can matter beyond its visual novelty. In a January 2026 Vogue interview about her Australian Open look, Osaka reflected on how sports fashion becomes part of memory: “When I look back at the players who came before me, I think about how those moments—those looks—have become memories that live forever. So much of the time, other people get to write our stories for us. This felt like a moment where I could write a little bit of my own.” The 2026 look was a separate, later moment; it should not be confused with the rose-themed 2025 US Open outfits. Vogue’s interview shows how Osaka connects visual choices with the stories athletes leave behind.
What Labubu is—and how Osaka’s dolls differ
Labubu is a character created by artist and illustrator Kasing Lung. The Associated Press reports that it debuted in 2015 through three picture books inspired by Nordic mythology, that Lung made a deal with Pop Mart in 2019 to sell the figures, and that Pop Mart began selling Labubus on key rings in 2023. Those dates describe the character’s development; they are not market-size or sales statistics. AP’s account of Labubu’s origin provides that history.

Pop Mart’s ordinary key-ring Labubus are not the same products as Osaka’s embellished, custom dolls. The WTA said the custom outfits would not reach store shelves, and the reports do not establish that the jeweled dolls were commercially released.

No retail release of the custom 2025 US Open outfits or the named, embellished dolls is established in the cited coverage. The WTA did say on September 2, 2025 that rose-themed Nike GP Challenge 1 shoes were available at that time. That was a dated availability note, not confirmation of current stock; check Nike’s current listing for the specific shoe and colorway before assuming it can still be purchased.

A standard Labubu key ring may be available through retail channels, but it should not be described as Osaka’s custom accessory. The distinction matters: the appeal of her match-day dolls came partly from their individual embellishments and tennis-specific names.
