Simpson’s 2011 filing cited “irreconcilable differences”; years later, Wentz described small problems accumulating and communication breaking down. The Guardian also reported that Simpson felt they had married too young. Those accounts offer context, not one definitive explanation.
What was the publicly stated reason for the divorce?
Simpson filed for divorce in February 2011, nearly three years after the couple married in May 2008. The filing cited “irreconcilable differences,” a legal ground rather than a detailed account of what had gone wrong in their private relationship. The Associated Press report carried by CBS News covered the filing and the couple’s statement; CBS News also reported the filing.

In their joint statement, they said they remained friends and were committed, loving parents to their son, Bronx. They asked for privacy and named his happiness and well-being as their priority. The statement did not give a more specific reason for the separation.
What did Wentz later say about why the relationship ended?
In a 2015 interview with The Guardian, Wentz described a gradual accumulation of problems: “There were so many little things, little moments.” He said communication had broken down. His comments point to a relationship eroding over time rather than to one publicly identified incident. Read the interview with Wentz.

The interview discusses the end of Fall Out Boy in the surrounding context, so it is important not to confuse his remarks about the band’s communication with his account of the marriage. His personal difficulties during that period, including seeking therapy, provide context for his life at the time but do not establish a specific cause of the divorce.
Did they marry too young?
The Guardian summarized Simpson’s view as that they had “married too young.” That is the outlet’s report of her characterization, not a direct interview transcript reproduced in the article. It is one public explanation associated with the breakup, but it does not by itself account for the marriage’s end.

Did touring and work schedules contribute?
A contemporaneous 2011 TMZ report attributed to an unnamed source connected with Wentz the view that his continued touring, while Simpson had stepped away from entertainment after Bronx’s birth, became a source of tension. Because the account relied on an unnamed source, it should be treated as attributed reporting—not a jointly confirmed explanation from Wentz and Simpson.
When did the divorce become final?
A judge finalized the divorce on November 22, 2011. The settlement terms were confidential, and the contemporaneous report said court filings did not detail custody arrangements. The Associated Press report carried by CBS News covered the finalization.

What can be concluded—and what cannot?
The public record supports several compatible pieces of context: the legal filing cited irreconcilable differences; Wentz later described accumulated problems and a breakdown in communication; the Guardian reported Simpson’s view that they had married too young; and an unnamed source described possible tension around work and touring. These accounts differ in how directly they are attributed, and none establishes a single, definitive private cause. The available reporting does not establish claims about infidelity, abuse, or a custody motive.
