In Japan, Pikachu is called ピカチュウ, written in katakana and pronounced “pikachuu.” It is the same name used in other countries. The official Japanese Pokémon site states that the name is used in every country, so “Pikachu” is not a Japan-only alternate name (pokemon.jp Pikachu reference).
The Japanese name and its spelling
The Japanese form is ピカチュウ. Katakana is the script normally used for foreign words and for many character and product names, so the spelling does not signal a translation. Outside Japan, the name appears in Roman letters as “Pikachu,” and the official Japanese reference confirms that this is the same name used everywhere.
Where the name comes from
In an official creator profile, Pokémon designer Atsuko Nishida explained how the name was built from two sound-based pieces. The profile is published by The Pokémon Company International (Creator Profile: The Creators of Pikachu).
“Pika”: the sound of flashing light
Nishida said that because Pikachu is an Electric-type Pokémon, she thought of “pika,” the Japanese expression for light flashing.

“Chu”: a squeak, but not a mouse concept
For “chu,” she pointed to the squeak a mouse makes in Japanese. Her quoted explanation is that she was not thinking of a mouse when choosing it. She picked the syllable because it sounded good and suited the character’s size. In her words, she “combined several different elements” to arrive at the name.
That distinction matters. The mouse-like sound is a familiar association for readers, and it fits the character’s later design as a Mouse Pokémon, but Nishida’s account presents the sound and size as the reasons for the choice, not a mouse concept.

The name is not a standard dictionary word. It is a coined name built from the sound-based parts described above, which is why it reads as a single nickname-like form rather than a literal Japanese phrase.
