The real Cheryl Bradshaw reportedly refused the date she won with Rodney Alcala on The Dating Game. Contestant coordinator Ellen Metzger later recalled that Bradshaw said Alcala made her uncomfortable. What happened to Bradshaw after that is much less clear: reliable reporting cited here does not establish a dependable account of her later career or private life.

Did Cheryl Bradshaw go on a date with Rodney Alcala?

According to TIME, contestant coordinator Ellen Metzger recalled telling 20/20 that Bradshaw declined to go out with Alcala because she felt uncomfortable. Metzger remembered Bradshaw saying, “Ellen, I can’t go out with this guy.” This is a recollection reported through Metzger, not a direct interview with Bradshaw in the cited account.

Alcala did appear on The Dating Game in 1978 and won the date opposite Bradshaw; Netflix and TIME agree on that central event. The sources support the reported refusal, but they do not establish exactly what happened between the two after filming. The post-show date and parking-lot menace shown in Woman of the Hour are not confirmed historical events. The Los Angeles Times says the real encounter remains unclear.

What does the film change about the real Cheryl Bradshaw?

Woman of the Hour is inspired by the real appearance, not a complete record of Bradshaw’s life or the episode. Netflix’s account of the filmmakers’ choices explains that dialogue was fictionalized, and that the film gave its version of Sheryl questions and exchanges drawn from a different bachelorette’s combative style. The movie’s character is therefore a dramatic construction as well as a portrayal of a real contestant.

  • Contestant number: Alcala was Bachelor No. 1 in the real episode; the film presents him as No. 3, according to the Los Angeles Times.
  • Prize: The real date prize was tennis lessons and tickets to Magic Mountain, not the trip shown in the film, the Times reports.
  • Warning from the audience: The film’s audience member who recognizes Alcala and attempts to alert production is not established as a specific person from that episode. Netflix says the character represents the broader pattern of warnings being ignored.
  • Bradshaw’s questioning: Netflix says the film drew on another contestant’s sharper questioning style for its version of Sheryl; the resulting scene should not be treated as a verbatim transcript of Bradshaw’s appearance.

Netflix’s explanation of the film’s creative choices is available in its ending explainer; its film overview also identifies Alcala’s appearance and win as real.

What is known about Cheryl Bradshaw’s life afterward?

Not much is established in the cited reporting. TIME says little is known about the real Bradshaw. The film’s ending, in which its version of Sheryl leaves Hollywood and returns home, is not evidence that Bradshaw actually did so. The available accounts support her reported refusal of the date, but do not provide a dependable biography of her later work, relationships, or current circumstances.

TIME reports that Bradshaw later recounted her experience to Alan R. Warren, author of The Killing Game: The True Story of Rodney Alcala. That reference does not, by itself, document her full life after the show.

What happened to Rodney Alcala?

Alcala was convicted of seven murders across California and New York, according to Netflix. TIME’s sentencing chronology says he received a California death sentence in 2010 for five killings, was sentenced for two additional New York murders in 2013, and died on death row in 2021.

Those seven are convictions, not a settled count of every suspected victim. Higher estimates should not be presented as adjudicated fact.
