The “devastated” description of Nina Dobrev comes from an unnamed source quoted by Us Weekly in a September 15, 2025 report. It is not a statement from Dobrev herself, and none of the reporting reviewed for this article shows her describing her feelings in those words. The breakup itself was reported on September 11 and 12, 2025, when the Associated Press said a person close to the couple described the decision as mutual. Where the “devastated” wording comes from
Us Weekly published the line on September 15, 2025. The magazine attributes it only to “a source,” with no name or role given. The exact sentence is “Nina is devastated.” The same unnamed source reportedly said the pair had begun planning their wedding and that friends were checking in on Dobrev. Read this as one anonymous person’s characterization, not as established fact about her private state.

The Associated Press quoted an unnamed source close to the couple: “It was a mutual decision, and wasn’t an easy one, but it was made with love and a deep respect for one another.” Because the speaker is not identified, the quote cannot be assigned to either Dobrev or White. The Los Angeles Times reported a similar account of a mutual decision.

Why the reasons are still disputed
Coverage of the split does not agree on why it happened. Elle’s retrospective timeline reviewed several accounts, and the two that conflict are summarized below. Neither should be treated as confirmed.
Account one: a wish to settle down
Elle’s timeline summarizes a People source as saying Dobrev wanted to settle down, marry, and have a family. This is a secondhand characterization from an unnamed source, not something either person said on the record.

Account two: a dispute over that framing
According to the same timeline, another source disputed that framing and said both Dobrev and White wanted marriage and children. This account also comes from unnamed people, so it does not settle the question in either direction.
Elle’s review also found that neither Dobrev nor White had publicly explained the breakup. Any specific reason reported in the press should be read as an anonymous claim.

How to read reports like this
- Check who is speaking. A named statement from the person is different from “a source,” “a person close to the couple,” or “a friend.”
- Check the date of the report. Coverage of a breakup can be published days after the events it describes, and later reports may add or contradict details.
- Treat adjectives as attributed. Words such as “devastated” or “mutual” describe how someone characterized the situation. They are not measurements of anyone’s feelings.
- Compare outlets. When two accounts give different reasons from unnamed sources, the disagreement itself is the most reliable finding.
What is not established
- Dobrev’s emotional state beyond the single anonymous description published by Us Weekly.
- Any specific reason for the split. The competing accounts above are unnamed and unconfirmed.
- Any direct public comment from either Dobrev or White in the coverage reviewed.
