Yes—Wolverine survives. Magneto tears the adamantium from his body at the end of X-Men ’97 season 1, episode 9, leaving the outcome unresolved. Episode 10 confirms Logan is alive. The cliffhanger echoes a famous moment from 1993’s X-Men #25, but the animated series makes viewers wait until its finale for the answer.
What happens to Wolverine in episode 9?
In “Tolerance Is Extinction – Part 2,” the penultimate episode of the season’s three-part finale story, Wolverine stabs Magneto. Magneto retaliates by using his powers to rip the adamantium from Logan’s body. The sequence ends before the show reveals whether Wolverine survives; it is a cliffhanger, not the recovery itself. Bam Smack Pow’s episode 9 recap describes the unanswered ending, and Esports.gg’s coverage likewise framed the episode’s central question as whether Wolverine was dead.
Does Wolverine survive?
Yes. The next episode, “Tolerance Is Extinction – Part 3,” confirms that Wolverine is alive after Magneto’s attack. The distinction matters: episode 9 leaves his fate hanging, while episode 10 supplies the answer. TechRadar’s season-one finale explanation and GamesRadar+’s episode 10 coverage report that he survives.
How the scene connects to the 1993 comic
The animated attack calls back to X-Men #25, published in 1993, in which Magneto also tears the adamantium from Wolverine. The comic and the series share that pivotal confrontation, but the show’s episode 9 ending does not itself depict the comic’s recovery. Bam Smack Pow’s recap says Jean Grey helps hold Wolverine together in the comic while his healing factor repairs the damage; that is a detail of the comic comparison, not what episode 9 shows.

Why the cliffhanger matters
The scene is shocking because Magneto removes the metal that has long been part of Wolverine’s identity, and the episode cuts away before answering the immediate question of survival. Calling it the “worst thing” Wolverine can survive is a dramatic way to frame the moment, not an objective ranking of every injury or ordeal the character has endured. What the season establishes is narrower and clear: Magneto removes the adamantium in episode 9, and Wolverine is alive by episode 10.
