Reporting points to two explanations for the threats against Salman Khan: Lawrence Bishnoi’s publicly reported grievance over the 1998 alleged blackbuck shooting, and investigators’ theory that targeting a famous actor could spread fear and publicity while advancing the gang’s efforts to gain influence or extort money. The first is the stated grievance; the second is an investigative assessment, not a proven motive for every alleged incident.
What is the reported grievance against Salman Khan?
Reports trace Bishnoi’s stated animosity to the 1998 alleged shooting of blackbucks during a film shoot in Rajasthan. The Bishnoi community regards the blackbuck as sacred, a context cited in coverage of the feud. That reported grievance explains the public rationale attributed to Bishnoi; it does not, by itself, establish who directed any later threat or attack. The Indian Express’s account of the case describes the connection.
Why might a gang target a celebrity?
Investigators have offered a separate strategic explanation: a threat against a widely known actor attracts attention and can frighten people well beyond the person directly targeted. The Times of India reported an officer’s assessment that the 2024 firing outside Khan’s home was intended to terrorise the film industry and extort money. The Indian Express quoted an investigating officer saying high-profile targets can make threats more widely publicised. These are police theories reported by the outlets, not judicial findings. Times of India; The Indian Express.
The explanations are not mutually exclusive: the blackbuck case is the reported personal grievance, while publicity, intimidation, extortion and influence in Mumbai are investigative theories about the value of targeting Khan. Available reporting does not establish one proven motive behind every alleged incident.

How did the reported threats develop?
- 1998: The alleged blackbuck shooting took place during filming in Rajasthan, the incident later cited as the source of the grievance.
- 2018: Bishnoi threatened Khan, according to reporting on his court appearance. Police investigations also said associate Sampat Nehra conducted reconnaissance at Khan’s Bandra residence. The Indian Express reported both details.
- June 2022: A threat letter was left where Khan’s father, Salim Khan, walked. The Indian Express reported the message as: “Salim Khan, Salman Khan bahot jald aapka Mooselwala hoga GB LB.”
- March 2023: Khan’s police statement, as described by India Today from the chargesheet, said an employee on his team received an email threatening Khan and his family. India Today reported the account.
- November 2023: The Indian Express reported a warning to actor Gippy Grewal that referred to his relationship with Khan.
- April 14, 2024: Two men on a motorcycle fired outside Khan’s Bandra residence. In his reported statement to police, Khan said he believed the gang intended to kill him and his family. That was his belief, not a finding about the perpetrators’ intent. India Today reported the statement from the chargesheet.
- Panvel farmhouse allegation: Navi Mumbai Police reportedly described a separate alleged plan involving surveillance of Khan’s movements and a Rs 25 lakh contract. The Indian Express reported the police account in 2026, including its allegation that 60 to 70 people tracked his movements. These are case-specific police allegations, not independently established counts or court findings.
- October 12, 2024: Baba Siddique was killed. The Indian Express reported that the gang claimed responsibility and cited Siddique’s alleged ties to Khan. That claim about the reason for the killing is not an adjudicated finding.
- 2025: The Indian Express reported incidents involving director Rohit Shetty and comedian Kapil Sharma’s café, describing alleged gang connections or claimed responsibility. Those reported links should be assessed incident by incident rather than treated as proof of one coordinated plan.
Why are people around Khan mentioned?
Threats directed at associates can extend intimidation beyond the central target: invoking a person’s relationship with Khan may spread fear among friends, family, colleagues and the entertainment industry. Reporting describes a threat to Khan and his family, a warning to Grewal referring to his relationship with Khan, and the gang’s stated rationale for claiming responsibility for Siddique’s killing. Each is a distinct reported claim; the available accounts do not establish that Bishnoi personally ordered every incident involving someone linked to Khan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is established, and what remains an allegation?
News reports attribute the blackbuck grievance to Bishnoi and describe a sequence of threats and attacks investigated by police. Investigators’ theories about publicity, extortion and influence explain what they suspect the gang may have sought; they are not the same as proof in court. Likewise, a gang’s responsibility claim is a claim, not a judicial determination. The reporting cited here does not resolve the ultimate legal findings on every incident or motive.
