“Burying” is a critical description of Disney’s perceived restraint around publicity for the live-action Snow White, not proof that the studio deliberately suppressed the film. The main reported signal was a smaller Hollywood premiere with limited red-carpet media access. Disney’s public record also shows promotion for the movie and a planned worldwide theatrical opening on March 21, 2025; its internal reason for the premiere format has not been established.
What “burying” refers to
On March 11, 2025, ten days before the scheduled theatrical opening, Gizmodo/io9’s Sabina Graves used the headline “Why Is Disney Burying Snow White?” The article, citing Variety, reported that the Hollywood premiere would not include the dozens of media outlets Disney usually invited to interview cast and creatives. Red-carpet coverage would instead be limited to photographers and an in-house crew. Graves contrasted that event with the film’s Japan stop, which she described as featuring performances by Rachel Zegler and her dub counterparts. Read the io9 report.
The reported premiere arrangements are distinct from the article’s interpretation that Disney seemed hesitant and might be managing political risk. The article does not quote Disney confirming a decision to hide or suppress the movie. A restricted press line can indicate a more limited event; by itself, it cannot establish the studio’s motive or the scale of its entire campaign.
What Disney’s public record shows
- October 2023: Disney announced that its live-action musical reimagining of the 1937 film was scheduled to reach theaters on March 21, 2025, and identified Rachel Zegler as Snow White. Disney’s announcement.
- 2024: Disney’s D23 coverage described a teaser and on-stage promotion for the film and repeated the release date. This documents public promotion, but not the size or effectiveness of the wider campaign. Disney’s D23 coverage.
- March 21, 2025: Disney published an article describing the film as a live-action musical adventure and saying it was set to open in theaters worldwide that Friday. It named director Marc Webb, screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson, and stars Zegler, Gal Gadot, and Andrew Burnap. Disney’s film article.
These records show that Disney announced and promoted a theatrical release. They do not settle whether the U.S. campaign was unusually restrained compared with other releases, nor do they quantify marketing spend or audience response.

Why the campaign drew scrutiny
The io9 article placed the premiere report alongside debate over the remake’s casting, changes to the dwarfs, Peter Dinklage’s comments about stereotypical portrayals, and political controversy involving the stars. Those issues help explain why publicity choices attracted attention. The sources cited here do not show that any one controversy caused Disney to change the premiere format.
Likewise, one event cannot establish a broader claim about studio confidence or audience demand. A systematic comparison would need consistent evidence across premiere format, press access, publicity events, timing, and public promotional material. The available reporting documents a specific Hollywood event and examples of public promotion, not such a comparison.

What can—and cannot—be concluded
- Supported: A March 2025 report described a Hollywood premiere with more limited red-carpet media access than the outlets Disney usually invited.
- Also supported: Disney made public announcements, promoted the film at D23, and planned a worldwide theatrical opening for March 21, 2025.
- Not established: That Disney officially “buried” or withheld the film, that a particular controversy drove the premiere decision, or that the event alone reflects the entire publicity campaign.
- Unverified: Disney’s internal reasoning for the premiere format.
The original Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs opened in 1937; Disney described the new film as a reimagining of that classic. Disney’s 2023 announcement.
