He said the last few months were not ideal, pointing to his loss to Cody Rhodes and his feud with Damian Priest as reasons he could not show his best side. That makes “felt lacking” a defensible reading of the first reign, not proof that all viewers shared it.
This is about Gunther’s first reign, from August 3, 2024, to April 19, 2025. Jey Uso ended it by submission at WrestleMania 41. Gunther won the championship back in June, beginning a separate reign that should not be folded into the story of the first one.
Why did a 258-day reign feel short on payoff?
Duration gives a reign time to build significance; it does not guarantee that the story will feel consequential. Gunther came to the world-title level with a carefully established identity as a physically imposing, methodical champion. WWE had described him as its longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion, setting a high bar for how coherent and imposing his next championship run might feel. The question is whether the world-title story consistently delivered that same sense of purpose.
The most direct evidence that the latter part of the run fell short comes from Gunther himself. In remarks reported by POST Wrestling in February 2025, he said, “I don’t think the last few months were ideal for me.” He cited the loss to Cody Rhodes and the Priest feud as factors that kept him from showing his best side. That is his view of his own run, not a formal verdict on the booking or a measure of audience opinion.

For a champion whose appeal depends on control, danger and an unmistakable sense of superiority, a feud can weaken the presentation if its stakes or motivations are not clear, or if it does not let him display those qualities. That is a critical way to assess the run, not a claim that every episode or match failed. The available record here does not establish a complete week-by-week account of the feuds, so it would be too broad to declare that one storyline alone explains the reaction.
What happened in the first reign?
WWE’s World Heavyweight Championship title history lists Gunther’s first reign as August 3, 2024, to April 19, 2025, for 258 days. The dates place the reign’s finish at WrestleMania 41, where Jey Uso defeated him.

There was evidence before WrestleMania that Uso could push the champion. In January 2025, Gunther retained against him at Saturday Night’s Main Event. WWE’s recap describes Uso landing two Spears and an Uso Splash before Gunther finished the match with powerbombs. That defense gave the eventual WrestleMania challenger a credible struggle against the champion rather than making the result seem to come from nowhere.
Did WrestleMania 41 give the reign a satisfying ending?
The finish supplied a clear, dramatic payoff. WWE’s WrestleMania 41 recap says Gunther appeared close to victory after using the championship and landing a splash. Uso rallied and made him submit. WWE framed the win as Uso silencing doubters.

That ending works as a counterpoint to criticism of the reign: it gave Uso a major achievement and made the champion’s defeat decisive. It does not, by itself, make the preceding months feel more focused or rewarding. A strong final match can resolve a story while leaving a reader unconvinced that the full title run built toward it as effectively as it could have.
How should the reign be compared with other title runs?
WWE’s lineage page lists Seth Rollins’ reign at 316 days, Damian Priest’s at 118 days and Jey Uso’s first reign at 51 days, alongside Gunther’s first reign at 258 days. Those figures provide duration context only; they do not rank the quality of the runs. A more useful comparison asks what the reign did with its time.

- Defenses and opponents: Did the champion face a meaningful range of challengers, and did defenses establish something about the titleholder or the division?
- Feud clarity: Were the motivations, stakes and title implications easy to understand?
- Character development: Did the stories give Gunther room to reinforce or evolve the traits that made him compelling?
- Payoff: Did the ending feel earned, consequential and consistent with what came before?
These questions explain why a long reign can still feel underwhelming without turning a day count into a quality score.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Gunther’s later title win change the assessment?
It changes the broader title story, but not the record of the first reign. WWE’s June 9, 2025 Raw results show Gunther regaining the championship from Jey Uso. The title-history page lists that second reign as June 9 to August 2, 2025, lasting 53 days. The rematch reset the rivalry and continued Gunther’s world-title story; it does not extend the first reign or answer whether its earlier stretch fulfilled its potential.

Was the reign widely considered a disappointment?
The phrase “felt lacking” should be treated as an argument about the run, not a measured consensus. The reviewed material supplies no representative fan poll or audience statistic establishing how viewers as a whole rated the reign. An opinion piece published by CinemaBlend on October 5, 2026, is one published assessment of the booking, not an audience study. Gunther’s own comments are more specific evidence: he considered the final months less than ideal and identified story elements that limited his presentation.
