Daphne gives Hugh Sr. Compound V because she wants to save the parent who stayed with Hughie—and to make up for the years she missed. Rosemarie DeWitt, who plays Daphne, says she also hopes the act might open the door to repairing her relationship with her son. Her impulse is caring, but the choice is a desperate and misguided one.
What happens in “Wisdom of the Ages”?
After Hughie’s father suffers a stroke and ends up in the hospital, Hughie gets Compound V with A-Train’s help, hoping it might save him. Butcher warns Hughie against using it, and Hughie decides not to inject his father. When Hughie leaves the room, Daphne administers the serum herself. Hugh Sr. wakes.

That final action matters: Hughie had changed his mind, so Daphne’s decision overrides the choice he had made for his father.
Why does Daphne do it?
DeWitt explains that Daphne is trying to make up for being absent from much of Hughie’s life. She sees Hugh Sr. as the “good parent” and knows Hughie cannot bear to lose the parent who has been there for him. As DeWitt puts it, “I think she was just trying to make up for everything.”
#1 Best Overall
- The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under Homelander's muscly thumb as he consolidates his power. Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca's son, and his job as The Boys' leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they must find a way to work together and save the world before it's too late.
Daphne also hopes the rescue could be a first step toward reconnecting with Hughie. DeWitt describes that hope this way: “The hope is that this is the beginning of something and not the end.” The interview supports that explanation; it does not establish a secret agenda behind Daphne’s choice.

No. The scene plays as an emotionally driven gamble, not a considered medical decision. Showrunner Eric Kripke described giving Compound V to someone in a coma as “unpredictable at best.” The episode does not offer a reliable outcome or a real-world medical parallel: Compound V is fictional.
