Ray Romano and executive producer Phil Rosenthal chose to end the sitcom while they felt they could still protect its quality. Romano’s explanation was simple: “We had done a lot of stories and we were running out of stories.”
Why did Everybody Loves Raymond end?
The decision was creative, not a cancellation following a ratings collapse. In a CBS News interview published on May 16, 2005, Romano said the team had exhausted many of the stories it wanted to tell. CBS had already identified season nine as the final season, and its announcement described preserving the show’s quality and avoiding an overlong run as considerations.
That explanation does not mean the series had run out of viewers. The penultimate episode attracted nearly 20 million viewers, its largest audience of season nine, according to final Nielsen ratings reported by CBS Entertainment. That figure applies to that episode; it is not the season average.
When did the series finish?
The sitcom ran for nine seasons and 210 episodes. Its finale, titled “Finale,” was season nine’s 16th episode and aired on CBS on May 16, 2005. The run ended as a planned conclusion rather than an abrupt cancellation.
