No official source we could identify explains why the game was titled Far Cry. The documented facts are that Crytek developed the original game, that it was built on CryEngine, and that it was once known internally as X-Isle. Anything beyond that, including the popular wordplay readings, is interpretation rather than developer-confirmed history.
What the official and contemporary sources establish
Four facts are solid enough to build on:
- Crytek made it. Crytek’s own game page lists Far Cry as a Crytek title and describes it as a first-person shooter with sandbox elements.
- It began as X-Isle. GameSpot’s announcement coverage reported that the game had previously been known by the working title X-Isle. That coverage describes the island-survival setup but gives no reason for the final name.
- X-Isle led to Far Cry. Crytek’s 2025 retrospective on its history says the early X-Isle project led to the development of Far Cry. It does not explain how the final title was chosen.
- The series dates to 2004. Ubisoft’s official brand page says the Far Cry series first launched in 2004.
The Crytek and CryEngine connection
The most common explanation is that “Cry” refers to Crytek, or to CryEngine, the engine the studio built. The link is plausible. The game was a Crytek production, and it ran on that engine. Plausible, though, is not the same as documented.

The closest thing to a developer comment is from Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli, who discussed the “Cry” in the studio’s name and in CryEngine during a 2012 interview with Ars Technica. He described brand recognition as one reason for Crytek’s naming. He did not say that Far Cry was named after Crytek, after CryEngine, or after any particular meaning of the phrase. The interview is about the studio’s name, so it cannot be read as an explanation of the game’s title.
The engine connection also has a limit in the other direction. Using CryEngine tells you how the game was made. It does not tell you why the word “Cry” ended up in the title.

Reading the words “far” and “cry”
Readers often take the title apart word by word. “Far” can suggest a remote place, and “cry” can suggest a call for help or a sound carried across distance. These readings fit a game about a remote island where the player is isolated and struggling to survive. Because the fit is so neat, it is easy to mistake it for the explanation.
No developer or publisher source we reviewed confirms that the title was chosen for this meaning. It is a reasonable reading of the words, and it works as a description of the game’s mood, but it is an interpretation.

- Stone Age By Far Cry: Enter an open world sandbox filled with the unpredictable chaos and peril that the Award-winning Far Cry franchise is known for
- Rise Above Extinction: Defeat the deadly tribes of Oros with all new weapons and tools in the original fight for humanity’s survival
- Control Epic Beasts: Tame every predator and choose how you use their specific skills to slay your foes
- Discover the Deadly World of Oros: Fight to survive amid lush redwood forests, harsh taiga, frozen tundra, and murky swamps
- Does a developer, publisher, or named creative lead say it, in an interview, post, or official material?
- Is the source about this title, or about the studio or engine in general?
- Is the explanation a fact, or a reading of the words that happens to fit?
- Does it explain why this name was chosen over the working title or alternatives?
Most “origin stories” for game titles fail the first two questions. A fit between a title and a game’s themes is a good reason to enjoy the wordplay, but it is not evidence of intent.

The name’s meaning is less settled than its use. In its 2015 announcement of Far Cry Primal, Ubisoft quoted executive producer Dan Hay saying: “The interesting thing about Far Cry is that it’s flexible.” That comment is about how the series could move to new settings and periods. It says nothing about why the original game was named as it was.

Ubisoft’s official Far Cry page also says the series has reached more than 60 million unique players since its 2004 launch. The page gives no date for that figure, so treat it as a company claim without a stated measurement point.
What would settle the question
A documented answer would most likely come from a developer interview or retrospective that addresses the title directly. Until one is published and found, the accurate answer is that the name’s origin is undocumented in the official and contemporary sources reviewed. The game’s history, its link to Crytek and CryEngine, and its earlier X-Isle name are the parts that can be stated with confidence.
